Miriam wasn’t around much either. Since Carter had introduced her to Ari Llewellyn, they’d been dating regularly. At least that’s what Miriam called it: dating. But Carter had a feeling his mother and Ari were having a hot and heavy relationship. Carter called her one Sunday morning to invite her to lunch and Ari answered the phone. He fumbled for a moment and handed the phone to Miriam. Then she stumbled with an excuse that Ari had stopped by to fix the pipe under her kitchen sink. Carter smiled and pretended he couldn’t see through the charade. They were obviously still in bed. Though he would have liked someone to spend the afternoon with because Jeff was taking a weekend bus tour to western Pennsylvania with Celeste to gape at woodpeckers, Carter liked hearing the pleasant tone in his mother’s voice when she spoke about Ari.

Running for exercise became a cathartic event, especially after the fuck machine exploded. Monday through Friday, Carter would jog or run in his neighborhood for a half hour to forty-five minutes, usually around Gramercy Park and the streets that surrounded it. But on Friday and Saturday evenings he’d take taxi up to Central Park so he could jog through the park and not worry about cars or buses or bicycles. The cabs weren’t cheap and he couldn’t afford to do it every single day. But he rationalized doing it on weekends, justifying the cab expense by telling himself it would have cost a lot more if he’d joined professional gym like all the other people he knew. Celeste and Jeff joined a gym and paid a small fortune, with monthly fees and personal trainers who walked around pretending they knew what they were talking about. Celeste and Jeff could have gone to Bruce’s small gym not far from the apartment, but Celeste didn’t like the idea of being seen working out with boxing types. She was far too elitist and politically correct for that sort of thing. So she talked Jeff into joining another expensive gym four doors down from Bruce’s gym, with saunas, massage rooms, and health food bars that sold politically correct “veggie” shakes that resembled the color of money after it’s been dipped in dog poo. A taxi ride to Central Park for an hour’s run was nothing compared to that expense.

By June, Carter had developed an even stride. Running in Central Park on warm evenings without distractions kept him free to concentrate on nothing but his breathing and his legs. Though it always started out as a painful experience, by the time he broke stride, his mind was soaring and his legs were light as air. One night, he forgot about the time and before he even realized it he was somewhere in the middle of Central Park. It was after nine at night, and the sky had grown dark. He knew other people jogged in the park after dark, but he’d never been one to take unnecessary chances. So he picked up the pace and headed toward what he thought was the nearest exit to Fifth Avenue.
