Nikolai met me downstairs, in a fancier version of his usual high-necked coat and black slacks.

He was outlined in a corona of black shadows. Not evil, exactly, more like…wickedly sinister. Above his head floated a crown of shadows, the tips flickering with some black fire. He was the king of night, threatening and forbidding and drop dead gorgeous.

His mask was black as well, from the way it absorbed the light, his was spelled in some way, like mine, nothing visible except for his gleaming eyes and full lips. It was vampire nature to show up to an event like this with as many protections in place as possible, even if you were the most powerful predator in the room.

At the thought, I had an uneasy revelation.

Nikolai was created fourth, according to Brendan. Did that mean there were three Elders stronger than him? Were they ruled by blood hierarchy, like the rest of us, or because they were the first of our kind, did that rule not apply?

Something to ask Esme about, after tonight was over.

I raked Nikolai with my gaze, like he was doing to me. “You look appropriately intimidating and deadly.”

“You look beautiful.” His voice dropped an octave, and his power wrapped around my wrist and dragged me closer, where he looped his arm through mine. “The dress becomes you.”

Since I couldn’t accept a compliment to save my life, I just snorted. “Let’s go scare some bad people into doing the right thing.”

Finn and Brendan should already be waiting with a full contingent of Knightsguard, under the guise of extra security for Rowan. Nikolai and I would be a last-minute addition, arriving seconds before Zachariah and Orpheus announced their alliance in front of the crowd.

I loved ruining people’s well-laid plans, especially when they were pompous pricks.

“I have chosen where we shall materialize.” Nikolai crooned, before cold ripped at my face and we dematerialized. I closed my watering eyes as we flew towards Darkmore House. When we landed in the center of the ballroom, Nikolai’s thudding power sent guests stumbling back, hissing in shock, until we were surrounded by a circle of round-eyed vampires, scrambling to put their mental protections in place.

They watched us with fear…loathing.

Nikolai leveled his cold, disdainful stare on them and they shrank back further. Prey, cowering before a deadly predator who could tear them to shreds.

A predator who held my arm as if he owned me—something Rowan did not miss.

My mate’s green-flecked glare blazed with hate, but Scarlett recovered quickly, pulling Rowan down to whisper in his ear. All emotion disappeared from his face, no hint of jealousy or anger, and I grinned at the vampires closest to me, my fangs on full display, raw hunger gleaming in my face. In seconds, I’d picked out friends from foe, noting how the mask picked out various auras.

Rowans was dark blue, my sires white, like mine. Scarlett’s was dark red, and like Val warned, the walls of this grand hall were coated with layers of wards and spells.
