CHAPTER TEN

Grant had just collapsed onto the couch and reached for the remote control, when he heard Dave’s key in the lock, followed by footsteps approaching down the hall. Immediately he felt lighter. With renewed energy he sat up straighter and looked towards the doorway.

“Hey,” Grant greeted as Dave entered the room.

“Hey, yourself.” Dave flopped into the armchair and grinned at him.

Grant tossed the remote back onto the coffee table, his smile matching Dave’s. “Did you have a good day? How’s the job going? I hope you’re settling in.”

Dave leaned down and yanked off a boot. He kept his eyes on Grant as he started tugging at the other one. “It’s going great. Busy, but I can’t complain.”

It was nearly 10:00 p.m. “They kept you late.”

Dave chuckled. “Not really. A few of the guys met at the pub for a game of pool. We ended up grabbing some dinner.”

Jealousy flared, hot and angry in Grant’s belly, taking him by surprise. He forced a smile. “That’s great. It must be nice to be making some friends off the job site. Thanks for the text, by the way. You didn’t have to let me know you’d be late home.”

Dave shrugged. “It only took a minute. Although knowing the hours you keep, I thought most likely you wouldn’t have been here anyway.” He dropped the last boot and sat back.

If only he knew how much motivation I now have to get home at a reasonable hour.

“Actually, I’ve been home for a couple of hours. Admittedly I did a bit of paperwork, but I was just about to watch something on TV.”

“Anything good on?”

“I’ve no idea, but I’ve lost interest now anyway. I’d rather hear about your day.”

“That’d be really boring,” Dave said. “No, wait. I do have some news. I’ve had an offer on the house.”

“That was quick.”

“Yeah, it was. Not that I’m complaining. It’ll be great to finalise things quickly.”

“You don’t sound unhappy about it.” Grant couldn’t imagine being actually happy to sell his home.

“Of course. Why wouldn’t I? That was the whole idea of putting it on the market. I’d rather get it over and done with quickly, rather than drag things out. And the price is good. Now I just need to cross my fingers the contracts get exchanged soon. It’s a bit more complicated with me being here in Melbourne, but it should be all wrapped up by the end of the week. Then six weeks to settlement.”

“Doesn’t it worry you? All the hours of labour you put into that place and now having to let it go?”

Dave leaned forward with his elbows on his knees. “I did the place up because I enjoyed the process and I wanted to build on my investment. I loved the house while I lived there, but in the end, that’s what it is, just a house. To be totally honest, instead of a loss, I feel a real sense of achievement. I took a run-down old place in a country town and turned it into a house to be proud of—a house someone else wanted to buy.
