Chapter 13

Raven

David drove down a long, winding road to a double-wide mobile home on several acres all by itself. I searched my scattered memories, but nothing about it seemed remotely familiar. There wasn’t even a cornfield or field of wildflowers nearby, like in my dreams.

“Did you move after I left, or is this the house we lived in together?”

His shoulders stiffened, and it took him a full minute to reply. “I bought this place after you left. I needed some fucking peace and quiet. In case you were wondering, all I do is work and come home to our daughter.”

Was he trying to say he’d been faithful? I imagined him coming home in this vehicle after a long hard day and caring for Rose all evening on his own. It occurred to me to ask, “Who takes care of Rose while you work?”

His hands tightened on the steering wheel. “My sister Megan did until she passed away a few weeks ago. She was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer and didn’t last long after she found out.”

“I’m sorry for your loss,” I murmured.

“Yeah, I am too. Megan was a nice person. I miss her a lot.”

I could tell by the tone of his voice and facial expression that he’d lost someone close to him. The grief looked and sounded all too real, too raw. He stopped in front of the mobile home and turned the motor off.

He glanced sideways at me. “I’m gonna get Rose. We can’t let her sleep all day, or she’ll be up all night. After I get her settled, we can talk.”

Still clasping the envelope with our personal papers in my hands, I nodded. “That sounds good.”

I wanted to be the one taking Rose out of her car seat and getting to know her, but it didn’t make sense to push myself on her right away. I was a stranger, someone she needed to get used to slowly. Cognitively, I knew that, but my heart didn’t get the message.

I followed David in and sat on the sofa, looking over the paperwork from his glove box, hopeful that having a moment alone to study the information might jog a memory or two. I started with my birth certificate. My full name was Daisey Lynn Silver. Reading it brought forth a memory of an older man yelling, “Daisey Lynn, you get back here, girl. Don’t make me chase after you.”

I closed my eyes, and images of an older man with grey hair, overalls, and a red handkerchief rose in my mind. I giggled and came running back, only to run circles around him. “Catch me, Grandpa Silver.”

I searched my memories for a mother, father, or grandmother. There was nothing, not even a sibling. Just my grandfather and me. I opened my eyes as I tried to digest that little nugget of information.

David sat in the chair across from me. “Rose is playing in her room. Would you like something to drink, coffee or tea?”

I shook my head.
