Chapter Six
As predicted, a full-scale panic hit Finn when he woke up tangled in Crawford’s limbs the next day. He was as disturbed that he’d overslept and was going to be late to meet with his accompanist for the wedding as he was that there was a big, furry, delicious man in his bed, one who’d fucked the hell out of him the night before. He slid from the covers, too chicken to wake Crawford. The dogs followed him, but Crawford merely flopped over onto his stomach, his hair falling across his face. He looked so sexy when he was all sleepy and mussed. Part of Finn wanted to crawl right back in bed and forget everything else.
But he was way too responsible to do that. He let the dogs out into the backyard, praying they wouldn’t start a barking fit, dressed, made coffee because no way was he going to be competent for rehearsal without it, wrote Crawford a note and rushed out the door carrying his travel mug.
He refused to think about what had happened with Crawford or how well the man had broken through his defenses.
When he got home in the mid-afternoon, he found a note.
Missed you this morning. Call me.
He texted saying he had to catch up on work and maybe they could see each other on Sunday.
But when Crawford called on Sunday, the idea of seeing him again made Finn’s stomach churn. Things were so achingly good between them. Why wouldn’t he want to go out again, or rather stay in again, in bed, being fucked out of his mind? But his anxiety wouldn’t let him think about how good things had been, only about how badly they could go and how he didn’t have the time or the emotional stability to be in a relationship.
How could he fit Crawford into his life when he was barely managing to meet his responsibilities as it was? Crawford deserved more than he could give. And yet…he was so amazing, so caring. He’d made the dogs listen to him. That alone would make him a candidate for sainthood.
The next week flew by without Finn making a decision about how he felt. He knew it was wrong of him to avoid Crawford, but the longer he went without talking to him, the more frightened he became of trying. He’d seen Crawford at rehearsal on Monday, and he’d been too embarrassed to face him. He’d rushed out of the auditorium as quickly as he could, telling himself he needed to hurry so he wouldn’t be late to teach voice lessons.
After that, Crawford didn’t call him again, and he started waiting in the car when he came to pick up Becca. Finn’s chest felt tight every time he thought of Crawford which was about as often as he took a breath. He didn’t eat or sleep much, but he couldn’t find the courage to do anything about it. He wasn’t even sure it was possible to repair things at this point.
