Chapter Twenty

Monday, 22nd February, 2016

Brookes opened his eyes on the first ring and sat up, stretching in an attempt to work as many kinks from his joints and muscles as he could before reaching for his phone.

‘Brookes.’

‘Morning, boss,’ Claire Reynolds’ voice said, and for a second – less than that, a split-second – he actively hated her for her always-cheery demeanour.

He blinked blearily at the clock on Hannah’s side of the bed. It was a few minutes to seven.

‘This had better be good,’ he muttered.

‘Oh, it is,’ she replied. ‘A bloke’s been found in the Rushall Canal, at the bottom of a set of locks.’

‘Is he dead?’

‘Not sure, but he’s being remarkably quiet if he isn’t.’

He recognised this as Claire’s usual brand of gallows humour and pushed it aside. He normally found it charming, occasionally even amusing, but this morning it merely served to annoy.

‘Did he drown?’

‘Unlikely – the lock was empty. Well, as empty as they ever get. His head’s clear of the water, at any rate.’

‘Fire brigade, paramedics?’

‘Medics are here, the fire brigade is…hang on…they’ve just arrived. I’ve got the woodentops who responded guarding the scene for now and I’m looking after the lady who made the discovery. More help’s on the way.’

‘Okay, good work, Claire. Give me a location and I’ll be there as soon as I can.’

‘Right. We’re at the second set of locks down from the A454 Aldridge Road, round the back of Calderfields Golf Club. You know where I mean?’

He blinked again, willing his brain to catch up with the rest of him. It took him longer than it ought for him to get a fix and mentally plot the route. ‘Yeah, I know where you mean well enough. Save me a space.’

‘Right you are, boss. See you,’ she said, and was gone.
