Chapter 20

Trouble started with a capital K, followed by i-m-m-i-e. Kimmie was on a mission to torment me ever since I set her up. When Priscilla’s house of cards fell, I never predicted a complete victory. With Dick’s wife and girlfriend folding, Priscilla had him all to herself.

Having another person living here didn’t irritate me as much as Kimmie’s accusations. She knew I fooled her into letting Michelle into the house. I refused to tell the truth. My lies started a war.

Of course, Kimmie never admitted to pouring bleach on my uniform while my clothes were in the washer, downstairs. When I went to move my stuff to the dryer, it had huge white splotches. The bleach fumes stung my eyes. I knew it was Kimmie who did it. She scowled at me more than usual when I wore my Sprinkles uniform.

Kimmie left her dirty clothes in the laundry room. It was hers since no one else wore tops big enough to cover a beach-ball-sized belly. I could’ve returned the favor and drizzled Clorox on her belongings. But she deserved better. Since she liked to roll naked on the carpet with Cal, she didn’t need her blouse. She didn’t need panties, or the armpit-stained bras, pants, or her maternity dress, either.

Kimmie’s clothes went into the fireplace. After a healthy squirt of lighter fluid and a strike of a match, the flames jumped on. What was cotton shriveled to thin, black curls.

I stirred the ashes with the poker, and the evidence blended into a swirl of gray. I had no choice but to wear the blotchy uniform to work. With a little luck, someone might’ve left the storage closet unlocked at the donut shop. A secret exchange was in order before starting my shift.

My life here soured, and I didn’t like these petty games. Kimmie brought out the worst in me. I needed to go. But where to?

I tapped Debby’s number into my new cellphone. No answer. The money Logan gave me covered the cost, but not enough for a bus ticket, too. When I called Mom, a recording said the number was disconnected.

My stomach twisted. What the heck was going on? Did my family move away? Even worse, Logan, my confidant, left the house.

Logan said he had errands to run and left with Priscilla. They didn’t go into detail, and I had other things on my mind, like finding my mother. Why did my parents disable the phone? I always felt grounded before, knowing there was a home base in Arkansas. My family foundation fell into a dark void. No mother, no father, no brother. I was out here, in a strange state, living with crazy people.

I put on my worn-out shoes and headed upstairs. Cal sat alone on the sofa, watching television.

“Hey, the tie-dye fashion looks good on you,” he said.

I glanced down at the white splotches. “You think? My uniform got into a fight with the bleach and lost. It happened when I wasn’t watching.”

“Oh.” His listless reply said he suspected who did it, but he didn’t admit what I already knew.
