Chapter 14

“My God! We were so worried! What happened? The guys heard the commotion on the police radio and called me right away. Are you hurt?” The questions poured out of Sonya as Nick entered the house, followed by Cameron. They were both still very wet and both shivered, even though the temperature was still quite high for that late in the evening.

“We’ve got to get you both out of these wet clothes.” Sonya took charge. The looks of exhaustion on both their faces told her what an ordeal they’d been though. “Max, Laura, run hot baths in Nick’s bathroom and in the guest room bath. Make sure they’re good and hot. What’s this?” she held Cam’s wrist as she took the briefcase out of her hand. The handcuff was sticky and wet with blood. “Where’s the key to this?”

“Probably at the bottom of the harbor.” Cam sighed, her voice hoarse from the cold and the fatigue. “It was in Nick’s pocket.”

Nick motioned, with his hands in his jacket pockets, that they were completely empty. “There should be another key in the top draw of the desk in my room.”

Sonya nodded at Will, “Get it. And bring some bandages, too.” She looked at Nick. “Go on upstairs and get out of those clothes. I’ll have Laura make hot toddies. You’ve got to stop shivering. I’ll take care of Cameron.” Then she took Cam by the elbow and led her upstairs to the guest bathroom.

“How did you get past the narcs?” Sonya asked, amazed that they’d gotten away. “This was a federal bust!”

“We swam,” was all Cam could say.

“Well, you’re going to swim some more, right here in the Jacuzzi.”

Laura had the taps fully open. Steam rose as she poured crystals from a jar of Epson salts into the rising water.

“That should make you feel better,” she said as she put the jar back into the cabinet. “I’ll get you clean towels and something warm to put on.” With that, she left.

Will came in and handed Sonya the handcuff key. Cam watched as Sonya unlocked the briefcase and handed it to him. He left without a word.

Sonya unbuttoned Cam’s blouse and skirt and threw them into the trash can. Cam didn’t object. She was glad she’d never have to see them again to remind her of this night. Her panties and hose followed them. She felt like a zombie, letting Sonya move her and undress her. Neither had said a word through all of this. Sonya felt the water, then pulled Cam gently to get into the Jacuzzi tub.

“Take it easy.” Sonya finally said as Cam started to sink down into the water. “I know it feels hot but you need to get warm.”

Sonya arranged a plastic pillow behind Cam’s head and turned on the whirlpool jets to gently massage the water around her aching muscles. Then she walked out of the bathroom without another word.

Cam sank down into the steaming tub, letting the heat push the chill from her. Closing her eyes, she rethought everything she’d done in the last twenty-four hours.
