I woke to an empty bed. Such a disappointment, but I knew Peony hadn’t left unless Grizzy or Ian had driven her home. No way she’d walk forty miles. At least I hoped not. I didn’t want the wolves messing with her, but I doubted they’d want anything to do with the human.

Grabbing the pillow Peony had slept on, I brought it to my face and inhaled deeply. It smelled of spring, smoke from the fire, and night air, a scent I could bathe in. My cock quickly hardened while I breathed it in and I wished she hadn’t risen so damn early.

I quickly pulled on my jeans, sweatshirt, and boots, then opened the bedroom door. I heard low voices from the kitchen area. After a quick stop at the bathroom, I headed toward the murmurs.

Ian and Grizzy stood at the kitchen sink, each with a cup of coffee in their hand. They stared out the window with great intent.

“What’s going on?” I asked as I grabbed a mug for myself and poured some coffee.

“Just watching Peony,” Ian replied.

“What’s she doing?”

Ian shrugged. “She’s just… I don’t know. Being.”

“She’s acting like she’s never seen a damn tree before,” Grizzy said. “It’s fucking weird, Jack.”

I looked out the window to find Peony wearing red shorts and a white sweatshirt. She moseyed around the forest, stopping to run her finger down a tree trunk, bending down to finger the leaves of a wildflower, and then look up to watch the magpies in the trees. Lifting her arm to block the sun, she watched those loud fuckers for long minutes with a smile on her face.

While I’d just as soon shoot them all, she seemed to be enjoying their annoying calls. Maybe I needed to reevaluate my feelings about them. Peony obviously saw something in them that I didn’t.

“Did you talk to her before she went out?” I asked.

Ian shook his head. “We were cleaning and loading the guns in my bedroom. We found her when we came for more coffee.”

And apparently, they’d never gone back to the gun task. Peony was much more interesting and pleasing to the eye than a bunch of steel.

“Last night was something else,” Grizzy said after taking a sip of his coffee. “I sure didn’t see that one coming.”

“Really?” Ian replied. “I did. It’s the way of our people. That’s how it used to be.”

“But she’s not one of our people,” Grizzy said. “We’re the only three left.”

“That we know of,” I commented.

“Yes. That we know of.”

Ian was right. Our kind tended to spin out of control while partying. Alcohol, music, and beautiful women led to frenzied celebrations similar to the prior night. The only difference would have been the sheer number of people involved. Back in the day, our festivities had often resulted in massive orgies.

But there weren’t any more of our people around that we knew of. We hadn’t met one of our kind in centuries. Not that we’d know if we did… the magic that held us in our human forms was accessible to all of us.
