Bridget surprised Sheridan by inviting Danyer over for dinner one night at the townhouse with a few of her friends. Eight of them actually, making a total number of eleven, filling her dining room table from end to end for the first time since Sheridan had moved in. Once Bridget’s friend Annie told her they used to host dinner parties once a month, Sheridan feared her sister had ducked out of participating for her sake, her being so antisocial for so long.

Bridget claimed she’d been eager to thank Danyer in some way for the culinary festival, and since Sheridan told her he didn’t want a thank you, making dinner for him seemed to be the only subtle way to show their gratitude. Every man liked to eat.

Each of Bridget’s friends, five girls and three guys, brought a dish of epic serving and a bottle of wine, and so they basically had an eight course meal with eight bottles of vino sitting on the table, conversations bounding from one corner of the room to the other. It gave all the appearances of a Thanksgiving. Well, what she envisioned Thanksgiving would look like with a big family. Bridget and her friends had such energy between them, they were practically finishing each other sentences, interrupting each other with pointing fingers, laughter, and slaps on the table.

Danyer leaned over. He was seated to her right while she sat at the head of the table. “Is it just me or is calculating physics easier than trying to keep up with the dozen conversations going on at once?”

“It’s just you,” she winked.

After a while, feeling a bit overwhelmed, she excused herself from the table, though no one seemed to notice her departure with much scrutiny. She ducked in the extra bedroom that’d been converted into their office. It had a small bay window with a view where she occasionally liked to hang out and read. Rubbing her arms, she took in a deep breath and half sat on the seat. The sounds of the dinner party faint but boisterous.

What was wrong with her? She was having a wonderful time. Much more so than she did at the sorority reunion brunch, and yet she still needed this break. Bridget’s friends were all down to earth, friendly, engaging, interesting people, and they made her feel as though she’d been part of their group, simply because she was Bridget’s half-sister. There was no reason to be upset.

Without warning, tears welled her eyes, and a sob escaped. She pressed her hand to her mouth to smother it, disbelieving her emotions had culminated to a rush of tears.

Were they happy? Sad? Lord, she didn’t know.

A soft tap tap tap on the door startled her and she turned her back and quickly collected herself.

“Sheridan?” Danyer spoke softly. “What are you doing sitting here in the dark?”

Smoothing her hands down her blouse, and trying to effect a casual tone, she answered. “I needed a break.”

“Do you want me to leave?”

Yes. Men hated tears and emotional breakdowns.
