Chapter 8

Adam leaned forward, resting his arms on his desk as he stared at Blessing. The hum of the air conditioner filled the room, counteracting the sun streaming through his open windows.

The last hour had lasted an eternity. Adam hadn’t even noticed that Charlotte and Emma had disappeared until he got her text. He was too busy trying to calm the tempers of everyone present and restore order to the tour.

Adam had tried to usher the tribe delegates into another room, hoping he could assuage their fears without an audience. Not that there were a lot of options for privacy, since the construction crew had to remove most of the damaged drywall. But in the end, the delegates had stormed from the school, yelling something in a language that Adam didn’t understand.

With Keith’s help, Adam had been able to shrug off the incident and convince the other members of the tour to return to the Hotel Montgomery for the first workshop of the day. He’d asked Blessing to accompany him back to the hotel and texted Charlotte on the drive back. Keith must have told Brionna about the incident, because she was waiting for Adam in his office when he arrived with Blessing.

“Please don’t quit,” Adam said. “At least, not right now. No one wants you to make a permanent decision after such a stressful morning.”

Blessing folded her arms tightly across her chest and pressed her lips together. She was staring fixedly at the clock above Adam’s desk, not meeting his eyes. “I’m sorry, Mr. Montgomery. I know this puts you in a bind. But that argument with the tribe delegates really put things in perspective for me.”

In his peripheral vision, Adam saw Brionna shift in her chair. “I understand that emotions were extremely high back at the school. But I think once we—”

Blessing was already shaking her head, hands fluttering near her throat. “No. I refuse to deal with this anymore. Lately, I’m upset all the time. I’ve even started to lose my hair.” She motioned to the tight bun at the base of her skull. “Do you see how thin it’s getting? I can’t keep sacrificing my health for this job, especially when there are no signs that things will improve.”

“Of course we don’t expect you to sacrifice your health,” Adam said. “I’d never ask that of you. But surely we can reach some sort of compromise?”

Brionna nodded at Adam approvingly. Blessing was still staring steadfastly at the clock, refusing to look at either of them.

“I know today was hard,” Brionna said, “but you are more than capable of doing this job. Think of all the good we’re trying to accomplish here. Generations of the tribe’s children will learn to read and write, and it will all be thanks to you.”

Blessing finally looked at Brionna, and that’s when Adam knew he’d lost. Blessing’s jaw was set, her eyes brimming with tears.

“The tribe doesn’t want the school,” Blessing said. “And who are we to force it on them? You don’t understand the dynamics at play here, Miss Cartwright.
