Chapter Six

Tess opened one eye, barely, then pulled the sheet over her head. The light was soft, subdued. But it wasn’t the light in her bedroom. It seemed...more affluent, somehow, filtered through curtains made of some material that probably cost triple digits per yard, striped in a masculine blue and gray. But it was beastly bright. Too bright for her head. A dull thudding in her temples told her she’d had too much—too much of everything—she’d been offered. And that included sex with Roman.

The mattress moved, and she tipped briefly backward against the solid warmth of Roman’s chest. His hand touched her shoulder, over the sheet. Said hand slid lower, resting for a moment in the valley of her waist, as if it needed a rest before climbing slowly up the rise of her hip. But wasn’t too tired then to dip forward, fingers tangling the sheet in front of her.

“Tess...”

“Yes?”

“You awake?”

“Enough...I think. What time is it?”

“Before noon. What time is lunch with your father?”

“Two...two-thirty.” She peeked out over the edge of the sheet. “Did I tell you I have lunch with my father on Sundays?” There was no memory of that conversation, and for a minute it startled her, worried her.

“You did. When we were talking about families and college. I said I’d never had a Sunday lunch with my mother in recent memory. You said that was sad, and that you had lunch with your father...”

“Oh. Okay.” Still no memory. Maybe that wasn’t the important issue at the moment.

“But I have to go home...I need a shower, for one. Change clothes, for another.”

Leaning forward, he kissed her forehead. “Then before we get distracted...” His hand pulled the sheet a little lower. “Because I intend to distract you until the last possible minute.”

She held onto the sheet for a second, tugging back, but let him pull it further down.

“You haven’t answered my question.”

“You asked me a question?” What else had she said that she’d forgotten? Worse, what had she agreed to?

“I did. Last night. Will you come with me to the club? At least to see...” His hand stopped as if it was waiting for her answer, too.

She rolled onto her back, looking up at him. A dark shadow of stubble covered his jaw, his hair messy, one thick curl falling over his forehead. And she did remember. “It’s really that important to you? That I understand this...whatever it is?”

“Yeah, Tess. It is.” He kissed her briefly. In the affluent light from the window that washed over his face, she saw it was. His expression was open, his face relaxed, his eyes clear and for once, unguarded. “Will you come? I want you...I’d like you to try, at least, to understand, if you can. If you don’t...” He shrugged, his eyes darkening a little. Enough to show her he didn’t want to hear no.

“If I don’t...is that the end of us?” She hadn’t wanted to ask last night, not with her mind clouded with brandy and the afterglow of sex.
