Chapter 2

Best Western Hotel – Shenzhen, southern China

Chuck Kabel was feeling jittery as he finished packing his case, ready to head for the airport; his meeting with Chang Wei on Friday had unsettled him, and the sooner he could get home the better.

Chuck was Logistics Director for the UK-based company, Gatmarsh Automotive, which made dashboard instrument clusters for luxury cars. He had just completed a three-week fact-finding visit to their subcontract manufacturing company, Sotoyo Electronics, based in Shenzhen, and he didn’t like what he had seen. There were some strange anomalies in the financial records, and when he had tried to discuss these with Plant Manager, Chang Wei, Chang had made it very clear that he didn’t appreciate Chuck’s prying. Sotoyo’s financial arrangements, he had insisted, were a matter for Sotoyo. He had also made it clear that he did not expect Chuck to discuss this aspect of his visit with his boss when he returned to the UK. Chang was an intimidating character, and during their meeting, his manner had been aggressive, almost threatening. Yes, Chuck was feeling distinctly edgy as he prepared to leave.

He put the last few items into his suitcase and closed the lid, before turning to his laptop, quickly checking for any new emails which had arrived that morning. There were only four, none of which were of any great significance, so he switched the machine off before folding down the screen and slipping it into its shoulder bag. He took a last look around his hotel room to make sure he had left nothing. The room was like that in any other three or four-star hotel: comfortable enough, but cold and impersonal with its regulation mock-mahogany furniture and generic decoration, especially once all Chuck’s clutter and personal photographs had been cleared away and consigned to his suitcase. It had been his home for the last three weeks, but he was more than glad to be leaving it now.

He grabbed his bags from the bed and laid them on the floor just by the door. He unlatched the security catch before opening the door a little to poke his head out and take a quick glance left and right down the corridor; there was no-one around. He picked up his bags, stepped out into the corridor, and made his way down to reception. The smiling, almond-eyed girl on reception – who spoke near-perfect English – was effusive in her enquiries about how his stay had been and in her wishes for his journey home to be a wonderful experience. Some chance, thought Chuck as he contemplated the very long journey crammed into economy class with barely enough room into which to fold his long legs. Nevertheless, he was anxious to be on that plane just as soon as possible.

After checking out, he made his way across the car park towards his hire car – a dark blue Toyota. He set his bags down behind the car and delved in his pocket for the remote control to unlock the car, but as his thumb hovered over the unlock button, he suddenly felt nervous.
