From then on, she started visualizing Marotrao everywhere. One day Prabhu Sir came a bit early. Seemed to be in a hurry. “Mother is serious. Need to go to the village. Please take care and manage for two days”, he told everyone. That was the first time she came to know that he was having a mother.

He gave keys to Mathai. He was not at all ready to take it in his hands. So he forced them into his hand.

“Oh shit this unwanted matter…” he babbled. But Prabhu had already left and didn’t even wait to listen.

Four days passed, still he didn’t turn up so a peon was sent at his place. He was back seeing a lock. “The whole family has gone with him. Don’t know when they will be back.”

Mathai was now completely shaken up. No authority in the office. Upon that, no one is paying any heed at the Head Office. Moreover enquiries from people. He was driven completely insane.

The proportion of new investments had not gone down. So in a way, there was plenty of workload. But along with that the number of people coming to ask – why the cheque is getting returned – was also increasing.

“No authority is turning up. Public is howling. Now even I will go on leave and go to my village.” Mathai used to say at least four times in a day in order to irritate her. But he didn’t get even that much of time. She was completely harassed by the thought –that now if Mathai also goes on leave, then keys will come in her hand.

But within two days, her uncle turned up at seven thirty in the morning and without allowing anyone to speak a word, he started shooting down. “Did you hear the morning news? Police has raided the Mumbai’s Laxmi Finance’s office. Don’t know much of the details. But seems to be a big and an intricate matter. There’s no news in our newspaper. But definitely it will be in Mumbai’s newspapers. Thought of asking you what the matter is. It’s a matter of my ten thousand also.”

“What are you saying uncle? I don’t have any idea. Our Prabhu Sir has gone on leave since eight days. Yesterday Reshma was trying to call up the Head Office but couldn’t reach. What exactly has happened?”

“What would I know? I heard the morning news. So came here to caution you.”

Hearing that news, she started feeling dizzy. Felt as if head was paining and aching very badly. She started feeling that she shouldn’t go to the office. But if she doesn’t go to the office then what – even this thought also started fearing her.

Somehow she managed to reach the office. It was the usual environment. May be people must not have come to know about it. But the figure of returned cheques was more. Still Prabhu Sir had not come.

She felt like revealing the news of raid on Mumbai’s office to someone, but didn’t have the courage. Mumbai papers usually arrive by 11.
