Chapter 5

Ava didn’t like that the others had left her behind to distract Saoirse. She felt as if they viewed her as useless. Lysa, the handmaiden who was barely five feet tall, was allowed to go off on a daring adventure, while Ava must remain at the tavern with Liadan and Saoirse. It wasn’t so much that Ava wanted to fight. She just wanted to be valued by the others. She felt as if she were this thing everyone was scrambling to protect, and she hated it. Perhaps Lysa was right. Perhaps she should learn to fight after all.

On the other hand, at least Ava wasn’t bored. When she wasn’t chatting with the knights beside the fire, she was on her back, having an orgasm, while Liadan’s mouth moved hard against her sex, while Saoirse’s lips sucked tenderly at her nipple. Crushed between the two hard-bodied warriors, Ava climaxed again and again with their fingers gliding inside her, with their lips kissing her skin . . . with their eyes blazing hunger as they gazed upon her beauty. She couldn’t really complain.

Saoirse was a marvelous kisser. Sometimes she was just as forceful as Liadan, grabbing Ava by the back of her head, turning her face, and kissing her hungrily, so that Ava was bent backward. She simply grabbed Ava and dominated the princess, her expression almost cold. It made Ava moist down her thighs, and she wondered if Saoirse were as aggressive with Rowan, who was a whole head taller than she and practically a giant.

Sometimes Liadan made love to Ava on the four-poster bed while Saoirse sat in a chair, drinking a tankard of ale, and watching with narrowed eyes. Saoirse was so beautiful and resigned, sitting beside the fire, peering at them from her great mane of golden hair. Ava often thought the moniker “the Lion” suited her perfectly, for she looked like a beautiful old lion, wise and strong, grim and never smiling. Even when she was making love to Ava, Saoirse moved with a sort of purposeful duty, as if giving Ava an orgasm was a quest she had been given and she must see it through – a notion that amused Ava greatly.

Ava had to admit that she was enjoying herself. And she knew that she was romanticizing things a little: Lysa, Rowan, and Ethne weren’t going off to have fun. They were going off to fight a group of bandit thugs and possibly be slain in the process. Ava worried for them.

That night, after making love with the knights yet again, Ava lay awake in the large bed between them. Saoirse was sleeping soundly on her belly, and Liadan was on her back, staring in sleepy content at the ceiling. Weak moonlight was streaming through the window, but the night was mostly dark thanks to the never-ending storm. Gusts of snow kept pelting the glass, shaking it as it howled. That Rowan and the others were out there in the roaring cold and wind amazed Ava: Rowan’s hammer really must have been special.
