Chapter 8
Kord shivered as the bathroom door closed behind them. It had a heavy thud to it and an irrational fear they might have been locked in went through him. He stopped and pushed against the door. It swung easily open.
“Hey, can we lock this?” He didn’t want any bears or strange people wandering in while they were sleeping, but he wasn’t sure about sleeping in the bathroom.
Austin stopped and swung the flashlight beam back to the door. There was a simple deadbolt there. “Will you feel safer with it locked?”
Although he hated admitting he was more than a little worried about things, Kord nodded. “Yeah, I think I will. But can we check the storage building and see if there’s anything there we could use instead.” Kord pulled out his multitool. “I might even be able to get us in fairly easily.”
“Okay, let’s try it. If nothing else it’ll smell better.” Austin grinned.
While they’d been walking from the truck, Kord had watched Austin as much as he dared. Then he’d backed off a little bit when he’d nearly slammed into a tree while getting lost looking at the side of Austin’s face, liking the way his rugged features looked in the light of the setting sun. He wasn’t sure what it was about Austin that drew his attention the way it did, but he liked him. He was a lot hotter than most of the guys Kord met up with, and if they’d been in a bar, or coffee shop, he would’ve thought Austin was way out of his league, but it sounded like Austin was busy and lonely, a lot like he had been before he lost his job. Being unemployed, he was just lonely, even if he did put in a couple hours a day submitting his resume to open jobs on line.
They left the bathroom and walked over to the storage building, just down the hill. The door was locked, but with close inspection, the hinges were easily accessible, and the hasp that held the door closed had been put on wrong and had the screws easily accessible.
“I guess since I smuggled drugs up here, a little breaking and entering won’t make things that much worse.” Kord opened his multitool and found the right screwdriver bit for the hasp screws.
“If we put everything back the way we find it, folks shouldn’t mind.” Austin said as he held the flashlight where Kord could see what he was doing.
“I hope not. I’ve never had a rap sheet before and I’d hate for it to get longer.” Kord was happy as the screws came out without a fuss. While a multitool tended to be handy, the were also awkward and never seemed to do things just right.
The end of the hasp came off and he was able to swing the door open without undoing the lock. “You know, we might want to inform the folks running the campground that they need to fix this so other people can’t get in so easily.
