Chapter twenty-two

It had gotten unusually bright outside, and Dante shielded his eyes from the sun as he spotted a cab. He gave the driver the address of Carolyn’s old apartment complex—not the one on Charming Boulevard, but the other one that Carl had dug up. This one was on Amber Avenue.

Taxi cabs, Dante thought. He was spending most of his time in them these days. Making too much empty and awkward conversation. Giving fake answers about working for a law firm, because once you mentioned you worked in the pictures—a mistake he made too often during the production and filming of his first movie—everybody and their cousin had a script or some idea that they begged him to pass along, or begged to be introduced to Ruben or some other Hollywood bigshot. But then he realized after a few times of giving the ‘law firm’ story that he needed to find a different fictional job, because the number two thing people in California had in common besides wanting to be famous in the film business was that they all needed a lawyer, or had a friend who did. If somebody wasn’t begging for their script to be read, they were begging for a free consultation and giving handshake promises about ‘splitting the winnings’ because the hypothetical lawsuits were ‘surefire’ and there was ‘no way they could lose.’

So when this driver asked Dante what he does, Dante said, “I work at a bagel shop.”

And that shut the driver up. There had never been a more silent cab ride. Nobody cared about or wanted to be in the bagel business—unless they knew how much money Dominic was making, then maybe there’d be some interest.

Amber Avenue. It ran through the worst area in California. It was as dirty as Detroit. The building was exactly what he pictured an up and comer would live in. Dirt and grime clung to the once-white paintjob. Weeds were sprouting all over the lawn. Repairs might have been done to aspects of the place years and years ago, but probably nothing during Carolyn’s time spent here.

The name ‘AGNES PORTER’ was written above one of the buzzers.

Her voice came through the other end asking who it was. She sounded afraid. She probably wasn’t expecting anybody.

“I believe you already talked to my partner. I’m working the Carolyn Ford disappearance case.”

“Come right up, officer.”

Officer. It was comical. He was wearing jeans and a polo, and still groggy from the lack of sleep. He stumbled up to the second floor. He was the last person anybody would have guessed could have been a police officer.

She let him in.

He pretended to use Carolyn’s planner as an official ‘police notebook.’ She offered him tea but he declined. She was a nice girl and it was a nice place. A lot nicer than he suspected at first. It wasn’t the ideal place to live, but Agnes had done a good job of keeping it tidy. He suspected she was a Neat Freak by the way
