End of July 1836

As a reward for Oberon’s outstanding—although a bit too treacherous—performance in solving the misunderstanding of the vampires, his father had granted him a long break from his duties, allowing him to rest at home while Lord Astrophel and Lady Delora caught up with the Royal Family in London. Drina was reluctant to let Oberon go at first, but soon recovered when she found out she got to spend time with Lady Delora.

So here he was, enjoying himself at a party with two of his favorite vampires in the world, for he would return to his duties in three days.

“Although this venue is too depressing for my liking,” Isolde said. “I’m just surprised that the Sullivans would invite us into their lair.”

“Now love, ‘lair’ is a strong word,” Edgar said.

“Do tell, how else would you describe this aesthetic then?” Isolde gestured around them.

Standing on the upper balcony, they overlooked the ballroom below. Gargoyles perched on the stone arches in the high ceiling. The scanty candles were the only light source in the dim room.

“Some lights are nearly out,” Isolde said with a frown.

“More privacy for feeding,” Oberon said, noticing the blood thickening in the air. He winked at his friends. “Don’t mind me if you need one.”

Edgar laughed and took his blushing fiancée into his arms. “We had ours before we came.”

Cheeks flaring, Isolde hissed at Edgar. “He does not need to know that!”

“I really do not need to know that,” Oberon said, regretting teasing his friend, who apparently didn’t feel embarrassed at all. “Oh, look. Time to dance.”

The harpsichordist began playing some trilling notes.

“Ugh.” Isolde rolled her eyes and brought her fan to her face. “I despise overly chirpy tunes.”

The trio descended the stairs and made their way to the dance floor.

“Planning to dance with all the ladies again?” Edgar asked.

“If they allow, yes,” Oberon said. “Now more than ever to strengthen our bond.”

“Will you have more than one dance with the special someone?” Edgar winked at him.

Oberon’s eyes immediately darted to a light blue silhouette on the far side of the room. “Just one.”

“Why not dance with her first?” Edgar asked. “Why wait until the end?”

“I want to focus on my task first so that I can truly enjoy a dance with her without worries.” And I want her to be the one I think about when the party is over.

“Although I find your assumption questionable and hopelessly dim,” Isolde said while giving him a sideway glance, “I agree the situation now requires a more delicate approach to maintain the balance of both parties.”

“Thank you, Isolde,” Oberon said in mockery.

“You’re very welcome,” she replied with the same sarcasm. “Your ridiculous conclusion about Lady Velvet would only help to solidify your seemingly neutral stance and would benefit you greatly as you attempt to befriend the young generation of the opposite clans while reassuring our side does not have the wrong idea of your friendliness.”

“Well, time to start our dance.” Edgar took Isolde’s hand as they arrived on the dance floor and winked at Oberon.
