Chapter Twelve: Ty

It seemed somewhat surreal cruising the aisles of the Psychotic Pig with Caroline. Maybe it was because I had prepared for this weekend to be all about Perry. While I had never been a fan of his, I hated that things had ended the way they had. With everything she had on her plate with the stalker and the new job, the last thing Caroline needed was a broken heart.

When we got to the checkout, I groaned at the sight of Sheldon, the manager I’d taken out a few weeks earlier. At the sight of us, he threw up his hands. “It’s just me!”

“Funny guy,” I muttered.

He chuckled. “Hello again. Glad to see you guys.”

“Nice seeing you again,” Caroline said.

“Are you enjoying your time in Charleston?” Sheldon asked.

Caroline nodded. “Yes, I like it very much.”

“We’re all really excited to have you living here.”

“I’m really happy to be here.” As the words left her lips, her chin began to tremble.

Sheldon paused midway through scanning the groceries. “Are you okay?”

Caroline waved a hand. “I’m fine.”

Sheldon glanced over at me. “Bad breakup,” I replied.

His expression softened. “I’m so sorry. A pretty girl like you shouldn’t have a broken heart.”

His words cued the waterworks, and Caroline began crying right there in the checkout line of the Piggly Wiggly. When I dared to look over my shoulder, the lady behind me in line was shooting daggers my way, like it was somehow my fault Caroline was crying and not that wanker Perry’s.

Right. We needed to get the hell out of there ASAP. Since they were short someone to bag the groceries, I swept past Caroline to go to the end of the checkout and started shoving food into the bags.

Upon surveying my bagging skills, Sheldon gave me a horrified look. “Be careful—you don’t want to smoosh your bread.”

At that moment, I would have dropkicked the bread out the door if it meant escaping the gawking looks and judgmental stares surrounding us.

Just as soon as I’d tossed in the last of the sugar-filled candy, I nodded at Caroline. “Okay. Go ahead and pay, and then we’ll get you home.” When she appeared momentarily dazed, I dug her wallet out of her purse. Once I had her debit card, I swiped it. “Can you enter the PIN?”

She gave me a slow nod before punching in the numbers. The register spit out the receipt, and Sheldon handed it to Caroline. With a sad smile, he said, “Take care, honey. Just remember, there are other fish in the sea.”

“Thanks, Sheldon.”

I scooped up the six bags. “Come on. Let’s go.”

As we stepped through the mechanized doors, Caroline began giggling. The giggling then turned into her bending over at the waist, laughing somewhat maniacally.

“Are you seriously laughing right now?”

Righting herself, she replied, “I just realized I had a breakdown in the Piggly Wiggly. That’s like the equivalent of being one of the People of Walmart.”

“I’m not really sure what that is, but yes, you did lose it back there.”

“You’ve really never seen People of Walmart?”

I shook my head as I opened the door of the SUV for her.
