Chapter 11

“Do you have any other relevant witnesses to call?”

“We wish to call the high school principal who had interactions with Mr. Richardson in the past and suspended him a few times.”

“Again, Your Honor, this is from the past,” Noah’s attorney objected.

The judge studied both lawyers before making a decision. “If Mr. Richardson has a delinquent past that could impact his parenting, I am interested in hearing about it.”

Both lawyers retreated to their tables.

Melissa’s attorney called principal Stephen Jones, recently retired, to the stand. Noah squeezed her hand.

Mr. Jones testified about how many times he had encountered a belligerent Noah Richardson, and how he had put him in detention or suspended him several times. He included a tale about how Noah had been caught peeing into his office plant as a prank. When Melissa’s attorney finished questioning Mr. Jones, he sent a smug look in the direction of the Richardson table.

“Well, that doesn’t sound very good,” Grace said.

Noah leaned over and winked at her. “Oh, you have no idea how interesting it’s about to get.”

Noah’s attorney approached the detective who stiffened and sat up straighter in his seat. “Mr. Jones, you were assistant principal at the time of these incidents, correct?”

“I was.”

“And was it your responsibility to discipline students or was your area of employment to oversee the school’s support staff?”

The man grimaced before answering. “Support staff.”

“And how many other students did you monitor behavior and provide discipline? And might I remind you – I did access all school records from that time period.”

“Objection, Your Honor…relevance?” Melissa’s attorney tried to stop the line of questioning, but Noah’s attorney had a quick reply. “This will show prejudice on the witness’ part.”

The judge told her to proceed, and she asked once again if Mr. Jones had confronted any other students during that time period.

“No, I don’t believe so,” the man answered angrily.

“So, would you say that perhaps you were targeting Mr. Richardson?”

“No, I don’t believe so,” the witness repeated. Noah’s attorney raised her eyebrow at him.

“Is it true that one of your daughters dated Mr. Richardson?”

“Yes, you know that’s true.”

“And you don’t believe you have a personal prejudice toward the man who dated and broke up with your daughter?”

The school administrator slammed his hand on the witness stand.

“He didn’t just break up with my daughter, he cheated on her, repeatedly. Not only with Ms. Atwell. There were others,” Mr. Jones spat out.

Melissa looked smug because some of the details of Noah’s sordid dating life had gotten into evidence. Even the judge looked disgusted at Noah’s actions.

Noah’s attorney leaned toward the witness. “Would it surprise you to know that your eldest was actually also cheating on Noah with his best friend at the time and that was the very reason they decided to break up?”

Like a telenovela drama – the entire courtroom gasped at this information, except Mr. Jones, who just scowled.

“Objection, Your Honor! We have no evidence and the attorney is just throwing things out there.”

“No, Your Honor, I’m the girl in question, Mr.
