Chapter 12

Work woes

Back at the hotel, we took it in turns to bath the boys and get them ready for bed. I got myself ready at the same time and was dressed in pyjamas when Sam was headed to bed.

‘Sam! Get in with me!’ Ryan encouraged.

‘Yeah!’ Sam said keenly, hurrying over to the other bed.

I watched in slight horror, as they cuddled down into the bed together whispering. If they shared a bed…that left me sharing with Abbie! I wasn’t sure I could cope with that.

‘Sam…maybe you should come back here. That’s where Ryan’s Mum sleeps,’ I said to him.

‘No, it’s fine,’ Abbie interjected. ‘They can sleep there if they like. I’ll just bunk in with you,’ she told me with an amused wink.

‘I…’ I didn’t know what else to say. I couldn’t refuse the boys on their last night together and yet I didn’t want to sleep in the same bed as Abbie. I decided I wouldn’t. I could always sleep on a chair, I mused. ‘Okay…well, go to sleep like a good boy if you’re staying there.’

‘Okay Mummy. Night night.’

‘Night night, sweetie.’

I watched them both as they giggle happily at their success and then closed their eyes and begin resting. I made my way to the chair where I planned on sleeping later. Sharing with Abbie would be simply too much.

‘Cheeky little tykes,’ Abbie commented as I sat down.

‘I’ll say! Don’t worry…I’ll kip here tonight.’

‘What?’ she exclaimed. ‘Don’t be ridiculous. You’ll sleep in the bed!’

‘No, Abbie…I don’t feel comfortable with that.’

‘Oh for goodness sake, Allie! Just because I like you, doesn’t mean I’m planning to jump you! Honestly, I do have some self-control. I plan on sleeping. Whether or not you’re beside me doesn’t change that.’

Suddenly I felt like a fool. I realised I needed to grow up a bit. ‘I’m sorry…I’m being silly, aren’t I?’

‘You sure are. Sleep in the bed, Allie. I won’t so much as touch you.’

I nodded and averted my eyes. ‘Okay…’

She looked away and out at the sea. We sat quietly for a little while.

‘I’m going to miss this place,’ she said after a long silence.

‘Me too,’ I murmured, watching the gentle waves and the beautiful colours in the sky.

‘I’ll miss you too,’ she said looking over. ‘And don’t worry…I mean I’ll miss my friend.’

I met her eyes and knew I too would miss her terribly when I got back home. I couldn’t help scanning her face, from her gorgeous eyes, to her lush lips. I remembered her kiss and felt a flash of heat rush through me.

‘I’ll miss you too,’ I admitted, feeling myself redden.

‘When will we see each other again?’ she asked.

‘Honestly? I don’t know,’ I told her.

She nodded and looked away. ‘I hope what’s happened this holiday won’t change anything when we get home? We can still talk right?’ she asked.

I nodded. ‘Of course! I love our daily chats.’

‘Me too…I wouldn’t want to think I’ve spoiled all that.’

‘Oh you haven’t. I think we just make better friends,’ I told her.

She looked at me but didn’t respond to that.
