Chapter Eighteen

"Truth or Dare, Rook?" I say as I set out the stacks of Fifty Shades cards on the handmade coffee table and take a seat next to him on the small loveseat. We grab a bottle of wine and prepare to play the game. There are three categories for each card — flirty, fun, and kinky. Which, I assume, means there's three escalating levels of sexiness, allowing you to really build up tension with your partner.

After I set out the cards, I put a hand on his leg. It's clear to me that Rook is conflicted about being here in the cabin, so I want to do my best to help him relax and show my gratitude that he's fighting his instincts as a soldier to stay with me.

"This is really the game you want to play?" Rook says, hesitating. I don't know why, because it's pretty clear from what Donna said that the dare cards are the fun ones that lead to sex.

"Is something on your mind? We can just talk, if that's what you prefer."

"I want to be out there. Fighting. Protecting you. This isn’t easy."

"I know you're a fighter, Rook. A soldier. And I'm a runner." I look up at the rafters of the cabin. Even though it's the truth, and it's one that I readily accept, it still is hard to say out loud to someone so brave that I'd rather be what most people think is a coward. "Time after time, I would rather lose the little life I've built for myself than do something that could put someone else's life at risk. By staying here with me, you are keeping me safe. You are protecting me. You are keeping this life I've built in Ironwood Falls, with my friends, with my job, with the people and places that matter to me, alive. I know it has to be hard, but it's brave, too."

"You mean that?"

"Of course I do. Being brave doesn't mean just kicking some other guy's butt. It means doing something that you know is difficult, yet doing it all the same. What you are doing here, helping me in the way that is most important to me, is what makes you brave."

There's another long moment where Rook gazes up at the rafters of the cabin.

"This isn’t easy, Eliza, but there’s no one else I’d do this for."

"I love you, Rook." I answer effortlessly; the words are out before I can stop them, and the moment they leave my lips I feel a warmth in my chest that floods all the way to my fingertips. I lean into Rook, instinctively knowing he needs me here just as much as I need him.

“I love you, too.” He wraps his arms around me and pulls me close, our bodies molding together like two pieces of a puzzle. His lips find mine. We kiss with an intensity that only comes from a shared understanding of both love and fear. After a few tender minutes, Rook breaks away from me and stares into my eyes with a focus that sends chills down my spine.
