Chapter 7

"Cassie," Carmella said, with a sense of anticipation in her voice, "I can't believe it."

Cassie's heart stopped as she tried to work out how she'd screwed up big time. Had she misread the signals or just handed over evidence that was supposed to be private?

"You were awesome, girl," Carmella added. "I'm so sorry we had to put you through this, but you knocked it out of the park. What a performance."

Cassie's relief was evident to everyone. Cesaro put an arm around her and

led her to a sofa where she flopped into the luxurious silk-covered cushions.

"Thanks," she said. "I thought it went okay, but I'm still a bit confused about everything."

"We all are," Carmella reassured her, "but we're slowly piecing it together. I feel like a fool. I've been stupid before, but I think this one beats them all."

"What's happened?" Cassie asked.

Carmella looked across at her father who was sitting regally in an armchair to her left. He gave the sort of shrug that said everything and nothing at the same time; it all depended whether or not you were on his wavelength. His shoulders hunched up, and his arms opened up so his palms were facing upward.

"Cassie, you've been good to us, so I'll tell you what's been going on. It's not easy to tell, though." Carmella stopped for a moment, looked down, and then asked. "Do you have family around you?"

"Not really," she said. "I don't have brothers or sisters, and my parents live in London. My dad was an airline pilot and used to fly long haul. He fell in love with the place so retired there early. I don't get to see them that much now."

"I see," Carmella replied thoughtfully. "If there's one thing that's kept me going this past few days, it's my family. This whole thing has brought us back together. It's not easy for them having someone in the public eye. I am so thankful to have them here."

"Yeah, you seem like such a close family. And I can't believe you're so normal. I didn't expect you to be so nice."

"Thanks. I've changed, but my image has stayed a bit raunchy. Raunchy sells, you know. Nice isn't worth a dime in this game. Sad but true."

"A bit like newspapers. They only want to print the bad news, isn't that right, Tom?" said Cassie.

"I've gotta agree with you all on that one. Bad news sells. Shock, horror, sensationalism all sells," Tom said, as if he were promoting the papers himself.

"Well, the papers are going to be as happy as a lawyer on a retainer soon because there's a story waiting to come out that's bigger than Eden Stockbridge."

Carmella walked slowly back to her seat while pondering how best to recount the tale of the last few weeks, let alone the last twenty-four hours.

"It seems I was the bait," she started. "I first met Jake at the GRAMMYs last year. He was charming and intelligent and all the good things that go with it. I knew who he was, and he was very different from most of the people I meet in this business.
