Chapter 15

Lucas got home around ten the next morning. His mom greeted him in the nervous way that he’d grown accustomed to over the past year. It was as if his being gay made her unsure of how to treat her own child. As if that single fact changed everything she knew about him, and he were a stranger now.

“How are you this morning?” she asked

“I’m fine. Did I miss anything?”

“Nothing important. It’s business as usual. We missed you at dinner last night, but I guess we can’t really compete with a prince.” She gave him a little smile.

“Depends on the prince.” He returned her smile. “Nico is special. I’ve never known anyone like him. If he were penniless, and rented out kayaks on the beach, I’d still like him better than anyone else I know.”

She hugged him. “Oh, honey, that’s wonderful. I’ve been so worried that you wouldn’t be able to trust anyone again after what happened. I just want you to be happy. If Nico makes you happy, then I couldn’t be more pleased.”

Lucas nodded. “I know you already know this, but I have to say it. No one can know we’re dating. This has to be between you and me and dad.”

“Of course. I understand, sweetheart. Your dad may have to work out some contingencies. I’m sure the palace staff has all been vetted, as the staff here has been. But it only takes one person to leak a story. And this is a big story.”

“Yeah, I guess it is.” The realization hit Lucas—if it got out that Nico was gay, it would be the top story on every paper and newscast in the country. It would be total chaos. Nico had to prepare his family.

It wasn’t as if Lucas hadn’t already known that. He had forgotten, in the cocoon of Nico’s bed, that the outside world existed. This thing between them was perfect and pure. But to the outside world, it would be a huge scandal.

And not just in Kalyphos.

It would be huge news in the U.S., too. A senator’s son dating a prince. He’d be like the gay Grace Kelly.

The thought made him laugh out loud. His mom stared as if he were crazy. “Never mind,” he said. “It’s nothing.”

“Honey, if you’re worried about the reaction—”

“Of course I’m worried about the reaction. It’ll be an international scandal. Me, the kid who never got into trouble. I’m going to cause an international scandal, just because I fell in love.”

Her eyes softened. “You’re in love?”

Had he just said that? He and Nico had been together for two days. They’d known each other a month. How could he be in love?

He swallowed. “It’s a figure of speech.”

His mother giggled. “It’s really not.”

He shook his head, trying to find the right words. “I don’t know what it is. I’ve never been in love. I just know that I’ve never felt anything like this, and I don’t want it to end. It’s strange—most people would love to date a prince. They don’t think about all the complications.
