After practice, Parker raised a hand to Hill’s office door and froze. She was sore all over, but that wasn’t what was stopping her. She was afraid Carly was right. Was she looking for trouble by coming down here? No, something about Hill had always rubbed her the wrong way. That cold gleam in his eyes as he stood over her on the field that morning only confirmed her feelings. Besides, if she was going to be the person that Lily saw her as, she needed to confront him.

Tap. Tap. Tap. Her knuckles grazed the glass.

“Come in.” Hill’s deep voice seeped through the door.

When Parker stuck her head into the office, the phone was glued to his ear. “Do I sound like I give two shits?” His tone was soft and controlled, but he pounded his fist on the desk with each word. “He needs to quit arm wrestling with the defense and drive off his legs. In fact, tell him exactly that.” The handset made a plastic popping noise as Hill pushed it back into the cradle.

“What do you want?” He didn’t offer her a chair. Not that he really could have. Papers, several laptops, and plays drawn out in green ink spilled everywhere, even onto the two guest chairs in front of his desk.

“You got a second, coach?” Parker shuffled her feet.

“That was a dumb stunt, Sherbourne. Kickers have a red jersey for a reason.”

“Yeah, I know. I just wanted to prove to you that I can play. To show you that you’d be smart to give me a chance at that extra point in a game sooner rather than later.”

“The offense has to score. That’s out of my control. Yours too, if I’m not mistaken.”

“Yes, I know that too.” Parker tried to beat down the exasperation rising in her voice. “But when they do, you’ll play me, right?”

Pursing his lips, Hill hesitated—just long enough to announce, as if he had spoken out loud, that the rumors were true.

Parker crossed her arms over her chest to stifle the tightness spreading within. “If you don’t, Marina’s not going to be happy.”

Hill’s eyes widened and then almost instantly narrowed. A hard glint flashed. “Again. No shits given. My job is to make my best call, and that’s what Marina will get regarding you. Who, if you haven’t noticed, is hands-off where strategy is concerned. She leaves the coaching to the professionals.”

Hill was intense, for sure. His tactics were sometimes questioned, but he was an excellent special teams coach. He should be jumping all over this opportunity to turn a soccer player into a football star. It would cement his name as a legend of the game.

“Coach.” She licked her lips to give herself more time. “At least give this some consideration.”

“I have. I plan to be on the right side of this.”

“Which is?” Parker was pretty sure that she already stood on the right side of this equation.

“Football’s side. It’s a thinking man’s game. It’s ruthless and poetic all at the same time.
