Benevolent yet Unfortunate: Titus

Suetonius and other contemporary historians described Titus as an ideal ruler and exemplary emperor, but we must not forget that they depended on him and his father financially. Titus was rather a man of contradiction. His political and military career, as well as his fairly short reign, were remembered by his triumph over Judaea and the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem (which the Romans celebrated, but Jewish sources described as a monstrous act and provided more evidence of Titus’s ruthlessness), some scandals (that stopped once he had become the emperor), and massive natural disasters that hit Rome during his reign.

When Vespasian returned to Rome to become the emperor, the uprising in Judaea was still not over, so Titus remained there and continued to fight the Jews until he finished them and completely destroyed the city of Jerusalem, taking numerous people as slaves. Both the Arch of Titus and Colosseum were built thanks to the wealth from the temple of Jerusalem.
