“Vanilla?” Kai demanded. “You’re kidding, right?” He burst out laughing.

Damien ignored his friend’s disbelief and leaned against the bar, looking out over The Aerie’s large main room. The lights were dim and the bass line throbbed, but none of the action looked interesting to Damien. He avoided looking at the eager subs sitting in the Nest. No way was he playing tonight.

Damien ordered a Scotch from the bartender, a Domme named Irene, and ignored Kai. He regretted mentioning Darby to Kai, even though as one of The Aerie’s Doms and Damien’s best friend Kai was the only one Damien thought might understand. After all, Kai had stayed vanilla through med school. But as much as Damien didn’t want to talk about it, he needed someone to snap him out of his funk. He grimaced when Kai’s chuckles didn’t die away.

“Okay,” Kai said soothingly. “I’m sorry I mocked you. Tell me what happened. You met a vanilla girl at an airport hotel and decided to have her? Why?”

“She looked good to me.”

“Really sexy, hunh?”

Damien pictured Darby, with her huge brown eyes and delicious mouth. “No, not particularly sexy,” he lied. At least, he knew Kai wouldn’t have thought Darby was sexy. Kai went for the statuesque blondes with big tits. He’d consider Darby to be a little brown wren. But just remembering her was making Damien hard.

“Then why?”

Tell him. Just tell him.

“All right,” Damien said as he turned back toward Kai. “I’d been chatting up the bartender, who was sexy by the way, when Darby walked in.”

“Darby? You really went wholesome, hunh?”

Damien ignored him. “She had that look, tired and annoyed, that passengers get when they’ve been bumped off flights or had their flights canceled. And she had a voucher for a hotel room.”

“Which you recognized because it was for your hotel?”

Damien nodded.

“I’m starting to like this,” Kai said enthusiastically.

“I just figured I’d fuck her. It would be a change of pace from the rituals and protocols,” Damien said quietly. Kai leaned in closer, his skepticism evident in his eyes. “Sometimes sex can be basic,” Damien insisted in his own defense.

Kai seemed to get it. “And you’d have to do that while on business because here, well, here you’re Master Damien and you have a reputation as a Dom to maintain.”

“Right. Only I couldn’t stop being a Dom, you know? I looked at her and I wanted her to submit.”

“She wasn’t a submissive, by some coincidence?”

Damien laughed. “She didn’t know what a safe word was or why she might need one.”

“Good God, she wasn’t a virgin, was she?”

Damien shook his head and took a sip of his Scotch. “Okay, so we’re in the room, and she’s—I don’t know how to describe it. She’d clearly never done a scene before, but she was—she was a natural.”

“A natural sub?”

Damien looked Kai straight in the eye. “You know that moment when you order a sub to do something out of her comfort zone and she balks?”

“Yeah.”

“She damned near flowed with everything I demanded.
