“You can use this room to prepare,” the giant leering bodyguard said.

He stood in the narrow hallway by the open door to the stateroom. There were no windows in the hall, but Dubois could sense that the train had already started to move. She felt the first lurch as it began to leave the platform, and now there was the feeling of smooth acceleration.

The man stared down at her. He was tall, probably 190 centimeters, at a guess. And he was broad, with a chest like a brick wall. He wore a plain, black t-shirt and jeans, with work boots on his feet that might have given him a little more height. His hair was buzz cut to his head. His face and eyes were hard. He reminded her of a movie version of a fascist storm trooper, or maybe the Russian boxer in one of the old Rocky movies from America.

And yet, he smiled at her. She didn’t trust that smile. It didn’t reach his eyes.

He reached out and grabbed the bag with #7 on the tag. The bag had breezed through security. Now, she was holding it, and he was also holding it. They were practically holding hands. The bag had the cocaine in it. He must know that. But the bag also had the guns inside. Dubois hadn’t had time, or anywhere safe, to remove them.

“The boss said you need a little nap,” he said. “He told me on the telephone.”

Dubois nodded. “I’m tired. I feel a little sick.”

The smile was as if a shark could smile. “I hope you will not give me a disease.”

She went to pass him. “I don’t think you’re one of the guests.”

He grabbed her by the arm. He was fast. His free hand snaked out and had her bicep in an instant. And he was strong. She could feel the squeeze through her coat. His hand was big enough to circle her entire arm.

“You work for who I say. You make me happy, and then I assign you.”

Normally, she would shrug off someone who did this. But the man was just too big and strong. A burst of something went through her entire body—adrenaline, fear, excitement—she didn’t know what to call it. This was a very dangerous man, and she was trapped on this train with him.

And he thought she was a prostitute.

Then Gallo was there. He pushed his way past the other two girls, who were more than happy to let him pass.

“That’s not for you, Boris.”

Gallo barely came up to the man’s chin. Also, he was probably two decades older. But his eyes were calm. They might have even seen some humor in the situation. One thing was clear. Gallo was not afraid of this man at all. But then again, the man wasn’t interested in him.

The big man’s shark eyes fell on Gallo. “The name is Stan.”

Now, Gallo did smile. “Well, Stan, thanks for opening the door. We’ll see you a little later, all right?”

Stan’s big hand snaked away from Dubois’s bicep.
