CHAPTER NINETEEN

10:45 pm Algeria Standard Time (Central European Time)

The skies over the Casbah

Algiers, Algeria

North Africa

“Five minutes,” a stern voice said over the intercom. “Prepare to jump.”

Dubois was ready. She checked the altimeter function on the smart watch she wore on her wrist. They were flying at a little over 1,300 meters. This was a good altitude for her. She’d made jumps from this altitude several times. They had geared the jump to her abilities. Apparently, Stark had jumped from just about every height imaginable.

In her helmet and heavy goggles, she felt more like a downhill skier or motorcycle racer than a secret agent, or whatever she was. She wore a dark jumpsuit that concealed the form of her body. Her deployment bag was attached by a harness to her back.

The sound of the engines was loud. It was dark outside the jump door window, but she could see the lights of the city below them, sprawling out toward the south. Cool air rushed in from somewhere. It was a good, familiar feeling. She shivered just a bit. Her body always felt cold—colder than the air around it—right before a jump.

They had come into the country on a private jet less than an hour ago. They had landed at an airfield west of the city sprawl and changed to this beater of a jump plane. Dubois hadn’t gotten a good look at the outside of it in the dark.

On the inside, it was very small and cramped. They sat on a wooden bench that ran along on side of the fuselage. The plane was not well sealed, which caused the wall of sound inside here.

Stark was staring at her. From inside his crazy goggles, he almost looked like he was underwater. But his eyes seemed concerned, and concern was something she rarely saw in them. He was usually some sort of cross between a cowboy and a kamikaze.

“How you doing?” he shouted.

She nodded. “Good.”

“You’ve done this before, right?”

Now she smiled and shook her head. “No. Never.”

How many times did she need to tell him? When her father was young, he was a paratrooper with the French military. He never really got it out of his blood, not for himself, and not for the people around him. She had been jumping out of airplanes since she was eight years old. But Stark didn’t seem to believe it.

It was starting to make her nervous, how nervous Stark was for her.

“Once we’re out, keep your eyes open. It’s going to be dark out there. It’s easy to get disoriented. We’re going right for the infrared strobe. Just home in on that, and steer right to it. Understand?”

Dubois nodded. A tiny drone flown by Jan had dropped a strobe on the roof of the building where they believed the auction was to take place. Both she and Stark had an attachment on their helmets that could see infrared, which they would pull down over their left eyes right before they jumped.

“Got it, Dad.”

Stark shook his head and smiled.
