Day 7, Morning

The next morning, Lisa stopped by the medical clinic and asked Sydney, “Do you need me here in the clinic today?”

Sydney looked over and smiled at her. “No, we’re just keeping an eye on Myles and Anna.”

“How is she doing?”

“Not as well as Myles,” she admitted. “She was doing better but has slid slightly. She’s staying pretty close to the oxygen, but she’s slowly recovering.”

“Do we have an update on the rest of their team?”

“Yes, three of them are doing better, but one, … not so much,” she replied.

Lisa winced at that. “It’s bad when the brain is starved of oxygen.”

“Let’s not go there,” Sydney muttered. “That’s the last thing we need to even think about.”

“And yet how do we not?” Lisa asked in frustration.

“It’s hard. I know. There will be an investigation, and that won’t be easy either. I don’t know whether it would be run by us, their own team, or by another party,” she stated, “but obviously somebody has to figure out exactly what happened.”

“I thought the generator malfunction at the scientists’ camp was just a bad accident, wasn’t it?” Lisa stared at Sydney in sudden horror. “Please tell me nothing suggests otherwise.”

“We don’t know anything yet,” Sydney noted immediately. “I’m not quite so quick to accept things.”

“No, of course not,” Lisa agreed, “but I think in this case it was just stupid human error, plus failed equipment.”

“We’ve seen plenty of both of those. Anyway, if you want to go do some training, off you go.”

“The teams have already been set up. I’m a floating member these days,” she admitted. “I can go out with them, if they have room for me.” She sighed. “I almost feel …” She stopped, faced Sydney, and shrugged. “I don’t belong at either place, it seems. I don’t quite fit here because you don’t really need me, although they assigned me here.” She looked around the empty clinic office. “And yet I don’t fit with the teams now because I don’t have an assigned group.” Lisa raised her hands, palms up.

“Do you want me to step in and make sure that you are assigned to a particular group?”

“No, because, when you need me, I do want to be here for you.”

“Got it.” Sydney nodded. “We do have some inventory to do, which I know is never anybody’s favorite, and it’s a whole ten-minute job,” she added, with a chuckle. “And I have some reports to write, but I need to handle those. Plus I’ll be checking in on our two outpatients. Still, I can handle it all myself.”

“Which I’m glad for,” Lisa replied. “However, I feel out of it.”

“I don’t know what I can do about that, and I am sorry. I didn’t intend to ruin your training session.”

“Not your fault,” Lisa said. “I just want to get out and do something.”

“Go talk to Magnus and see if he’s got something you can do out there. Or Mountain or the colonel or the staff sergeant or somebody. Be proactive.
