Jimmy had picked him up for rehearsal somewhat early so they could stop for what amounted to a late breakfast before the band met up at the space for the one o’clock practice. It would be another eight-hour day with an hour dinner break in between. Aubrey had called him that morning to see if he needed a ride. The disappointment in his voice when Bryan had said he had it covered was only partially veiled.
When they’d arrived, Aubrey was already there. Bryan had a guilty thought that it was probably a good thing they’d shown up separately to stem any gossip. He rubbed his forehead. Another issue to discuss.
Jimmy carried his bass in a beat-up hard shell case that sported stickers in varying stages of wear, from cities around the world. Patches of the outer covering had also worn away, the edges frayed from years of certain abuse. The bassist hadn’t bothered with an amp. The previous day, Bryan had discovered that all of the musicians availed themselves of the hall’s backline already in place. It saved them from the hassle of having to drag their gear with them every day and take the time to set up. All they needed were their instruments and any effects boards or pedals they wanted to use.
He caught Aubrey’s eye and waved. Aubrey was on the stage already and had been fussing with his microphone stand. He waved back in a way that belied his typical enthusiasm, a hesitant smile on his lips. It was obvious that Aubrey was remaining cautious. On one level, Bryan thought it was for the best. On another, he ached to have them back to the way they’d been.
Later.
Gradually, everyone took their places. The initial rush of electric guitars supported by the thunderous boom of Jimmy’s bass and the heavy drum beats took Bryan to a place of calm. The moment Aubrey’s growling tenor filled the room, it was as if he was back in Aubrey’s embrace. There was nothing like it for him and there never would be.
The hours passed as the band focused on three different songs from the ones they’d worked on the day before. Aubrey had explained that once they’d gotten the material down fairly well, they’d start running the set. One of the tunes was the new one Aubrey had played for him their first day, Tough Survives. The sentiment of the song took on even more meaning in light of what he’d recently learned from Jimmy about Aubrey’s past.
During a fifteen-minute break, so some of the guys could go out and smoke or grab some coffee at the refreshment table, Aubrey cautiously moved toward him. Bryan hadn’t intended on making him suffer by insisting that they wait before they spoke at all until after rehearsal, so he quickly closed the gap between them.
“Hey.”
Bryan angled toward him to keep his words private. “I’d take you in my arms right now Aubrey, if I could.”
Aubrey’s body visibly relaxed as if he’d let out a huge sigh of relief.
