Chapter Eight

I followed Nathan to the salon section of the spa. Anne stood waiting for me at the barber’s chair. My eyebrows shot up into my hair line. Her lips were pressed in a tight fine line, displaying her distaste. “Anne.” I tipped my head in greeting. “Sit Nik.” She demanded, her voice firm. I scurried over to the chair and sat. I turned to see Nathan’s retreating form. The bastard left me alone. I couldn’t blame him though. Anne scared the shit out of me. Anne tugged the hair tie from my hair roughly. “Hey” I cried as I reached back to massage my scalp. She swatted my hand away. “Quit being a baby, Nik.” My shoulders slumped in defeat. Ann wrapped a cape around me and fastened it at the neck.

“Why do you have long hair?” Anne asked deadpan. I shrugged my shoulders, searching for an answer that would please her. I honestly didn’t know why I kept my hair long. As teenagers we all had long hair, it went with being a rocker. As we got older they guys had cut their hair one by one, until I was the only one left with long hair. “It’s just always been long since I was a teen.” Anne tsked in disapproval of my answer. “Nik, do you like looking homeless?” I gasped at her bluntness. “Anne, I do not look homeless.” Anne cocked her head and glared at me in the mirror. “You look homeless, Nikolia.” Her tone antagonistic. My head fell back in despair. “Do what you must to make me presentable to human kind, Anne.” I said gloomily, defeated by this woman. Anne perked up as I relinquished control to her. For the first time I saw her smile. I was taken aback at the way her smile transformed her face, the lines softened, her eyes lit up and made her look ten years younger. Anne was actually a strikingly beautiful woman when she wasn’t glaring in contempt.

I kept my eyes sealed tight as Anne worked her magic. I cringed as I heard the snip, snip of the scissors. I felt my head get lighter and lighter as Anne cut away at my hair. It felt as though I were not only shedding my hair but parts of me. I tried to focus on all of the positive things. I tried to imagine the surprise on Evie’s face when she would see me again with my hair gone. I hoped she would like it. For some reason her opinion mattered to me. The woman has crawled under my skin in less than twenty-four hours. I tensed up when I heard the buzz of the clippers start. I silently prayed that Anne would at least leave something on my head.

Anne spun my chair around, my back to the mirror as she took the clippers to my head. She hummed as she worked, her voice was surprisingly good. I recognized the tune of the song she hummed. I sang along while she hummed, I cracked open an eye and caught her smiling as she continued to hum.
