Chapter Four

At a quarter past midnight, everyone seemed to return to normal, and the mean-spirited energy in the house dissipated like it had never been. Evan and the others looked for Gideon for over two hours before they gave up and went home to wait for him. Seth and Ter had gone back to the Brats’ apartment to check and see if he was there, but Evan feared that he was probably traipsing around through back alleyways to avoid them. I never should have said that. God, why did I say that?

“Don’t blame yourself, Evan,” Donnie said, squeezing his shoulder. “It wasn’t your fault. There was some seriously bad juju in the house. None of us would’ve said the things we did normally.”

“Agreed,” Wes rumbled.

Evan sighed and rubbed his temples. “This is the worst party in the history of Christmas parties.”

“We’ll get it right next year,” Dodger reassured.

“If there is a next year. I don’t want to be part of a pack if it’s going to rip me and my mate apart,” Evan said darkly, pulling his jacket closer to him. He was still freezing, and his animal was none too happy at the prospect of his mate somewhere alone and cold in the city. He’d tried to track him down by scent, but it had seemed to all but vanish when he’d hit the sidewalk. It was the damnedest thing. Maybe it was an unknown omega skill or something. He sighed. He didn’t even care about that anymore. Gideon being an omega didn’t change a damn thing. Gideon was his, and that was all there was to it. Besides, he didn’t want Gideon to obey him just because of some biological compulsion anyway. His willing submission meant so much more than that.

The front door opened, and Evan felt a surge of hope before it was promptly dashed as the scent of Seth and Ter filled the room. “He’s not in the French Quarter, and he’s not over near our apartment,” Seth declared. “There is a heavy smell of vampires outside, though. Depending on their skills, it could explain why we were all at one another’s throats earlier.”

Evan frowned. “Why would vampires want to influence our Christmas party?” He knew that he hadn’t really gotten along amicably with the vampire who had been stalking Gideon over a case of mistaken identity, but he hadn’t torn into the man like he’d wanted to. Other than Seth, it was the only other vampire he’d had any sort of interaction with.

Seth thumbed his finger at Ter. “Possibly because Ter has been avoiding their prince like the damn plague since Ter found out that he was his Hebecta. They probably expected him to be the one to flounce out like a drama queen. Gideon probably just beat them to the punch.”

“Do you think they’ve taken Gideon?” Evan asked, his hackles rising at the thought. There was no way he would allow someone to take his beloved away from him.

Seth shrugged. “I have no other explanation.
