We plodded down to the kitchen to find Kyle standing at the coffee pot and Lizzie sitting at the table with a mug of herbal tea. She looked a little green around the gills, and I bit my lips to keep from smiling. It was obvious that she was dealing with morning sickness, and I didn’t feel the least bit bad for her as I waited for Rob to get us some coffee and pull out my chair so we could take the seats directly across from her.
She looked up mournfully from her tea and shook her head. “God, I can’t believe Mom and Dad are still doing this whole sleeping-in-on-Sundays thing. It’s disgusting and unnecessary. They don’t even have kids at home any more. They can ‘sleep in’ anytime they want.”
She did air quotes when she said the words sleep in, and I frowned. Maybe pregnancy was making her mean.
“Wow, Lizzie, that’s a little rude. So they like to sleep in on Sundays. What’s the big deal?”
I looked around the table and found all three of them staring at me with expressions of disbelief. Even Rob.
Oh, come on. Et tu, Brutus?
“What?”
Lizzie laughed. “Oh my word, Stella. You are so freaking clueless, sometimes.”
Kyle was nodding, and Rob sat there looking pained.
“What?” I repeated, growing increasingly frustrated.
“They aren’t sleeping. Sunday mornings were never about sleeping in. It was about getting us to leave them alone and fend for ourselves, so they could... you know…”
She whispered the last part, and I stared at her as her meaning sank in. Ew.
“Oh my god, Lizzie! Are you kidding me?” My nose wrinkled, and my voice rose two octaves. “Why would you tell me that right now?”
“Oh relax, Stella. It’s just sex. You’d have figured it out ages ago if you hadn’t always had your nose in a book or your tongue down Kyle’s throat.”
My cheeks burned. If I hadn’t known my mom would kill me for leaving without saying goodbye, I’d have left right then. It was bad enough I had to think about my parents’ sex life, but the Kyle comment had been over the top. Especially with Kyle standing right there. And Rob sitting next to me. And Lizzie carrying Kyle’s baby.
“I know it’s just sex,” I muttered. “And I know our parents still engage in coitus.” I used the technical term, and Lizzie rolled her eyes. “But knowing someone has a healthy sex life, and knowing that they are upstairs doing it right this freaking second are two entirely different things. And ew. Just ew.”
Before I could gag, or Lizzie could taunt, or Kyle could nod like a buffoon, we heard their footsteps on the stairwell. In unison, we lifted our mugs to our lips and sipped. Well, three of us did, anyway. Rob pretended to sip.
I was still trying to choke down my coffee when Mom joined us at the table.
One look at her mussed hair and flushed cheeks, and it was obvious that what Lizzie said was true.
How did I miss this all these years?
She sat down at the end of the table and yawned.
