A familiar pattern developed over the next few weeks. I had tipped off one of the Havish’s valets. He’d let me know when Sadie left the estate. I would inconspicuously visit the Thraxton a few nights a week and hoped to get her alone and sober. She was with Rudy, only because she was still addicted to opiates. He was hooked too and sometimes abandoned her in the club. I would take her home while Rudy and Zach continued to get high in the backroom or would head out to deal some of the drugs and alcohol with Nia. Cassie had been coming to the club less frequently.

Eventually, Cassie stopped coming altogether; she’d escaped Zach and the drug’s grip. I would find out later that she’d developed a close bond with James, the other vampire I’d met a few weeks before. He would sire her, and she would be rescued. I had hoped the same for Sadie. I’d waited and cajoled when I could, trying to convince her that I could help.

One evening the stars aligned; the timing was perfect. I was tipped off by Mama Bess that Rudy was out of town with Nia, making deals on heroin and booze. Zach was too busy handling the club alone to watch Sadie. That night I’d finally have her to myself and I was prepared.

I strolled into the Thraxton full of confidence and more excited than I’d been in a while. I met Sadie at the bar. She wore a cobalt blue beaded dress that brought out a wicked sheen in her eyes. We were careful not to be too obviously connected at first. The burlesque show and band started on cue.

Sadie jumped up. “C’mon babe, let’s dance!” Her eyes sparkled even in the smoky room. I stood, gathered her arm, and tugged her back. Tough Sadie was present.

“I want to dance somewhere else. Are you ready to go?” My eyes bore into her. She breathed a true sigh. Her eyes were wide with excitement. Her ruby lips parted as her mouth dropped open. She hadn’t expected this. I tugged at her gloved hand and led her through the crowd as they surged forward to see the dancers.

I caught a mischievous look in Mama’s eye as we were leaving. She smirked and shook her head. I knew she wouldn’t tell. Secretly she hated Rudy, but he paid her well and the money kept her there. We left the Thraxton and drove to my apartment building. I stopped upfront and the doorman helped Sadie out.

“Nice place you got here.” She smiled broadly, impressed with the dark marble-trimmed building.

“Wish I owned it all.” I winked back at her. She was lovely in the luminescence of the streetlamps. Steam rose off the streets freshly cooled from a light spring shower that had ended moments before. A full moon had made its way out of the clouds and glowed a brilliant marigold. We hustled inside. I ushered her to a side freight elevator. She shot me a puzzled glance.
