River

River had been fighting the urge to run to the mud pit all night. She lost the battle when Jonathan shifted. She peeled off Reuben’s flank, dodged Jesse then headed back in the opposite direction, toward her mate.

The entire pack followed. The sound of Lazarus’s chains, rattling and clanking as he ran, grew fainter as he fell behind.

Reuben closed the distance and snarled at her to stop.

River tried, but her wolf refused to relinquish control. She might have managed it if the moon weren’t full. But its irresistible light filled her wolf with magic, giving her strength and power. Her spine flexed and arched as she stretched out in a full run.

All the female wolves and most of the males fell back.

Something hit River’s ribs, knocking her off her feet. She yelped as she tumbled across the ground. Reuben’s wolf stood over her and growled.

River’s wolf used what little air remained in her lungs to snarl back at him. Not my alpha.

He lowered his head then took her throat in his teeth, still growling.

River couldn’t read his mind any more than he could read hers, but his message was clear. Submit or suffer the consequences.

Her mate’s distant howl tore through her, filling her with a yearning so intense it burned. She closed her eyes and whined.

The huge male released her throat, but continued to stand over her prone body. She lifted her head and licked his muzzle. He lifted one massive paw, giving her just enough room to roll over and stand up. He butted her flank with his head, herding her away from her mate. She repressed the urge to growl at him then trotted forward. The male snapped at her ear as he passed, obviously still disgruntled by her insubordination.

Not my alpha.

River didn’t know how much her wolf could understand but she tried to reason with the beast. Be patient. Jonathan’s time will come. If you don’t get us all killed.
