It may, in fact, be similar in intent to rituals of self-sacrifice where blood is drawn from the ears, tongue, or penis as an offering.13 The removal of a portion of a finger by the mother upon the death of a male child is known from several later ethnographic contexts, and also from the Maya region (Andrews 1959). Its presence here once again underscores the diversity of origins and interpretations for human sacrifice in eastern Mesoamerica.
