It was exactly fifteen hours later when we pulled into the lumber mill. It would still be another two hours before the sun rose. Large, dark objects loomed menacingly over the landscape. Towers of massacred trees lay discarded in piles, remnants of a life before the revolution when people had the choice in what they wanted to do with their own lives.

I had the thermal optics turned on in Bernice to search for signs of life, but the mill appeared to be lifeless. I jumped when I heard a thunk on the top of Bernice. Something was on the top of my machine. I stopped and pulled out my sword, my heart beating in my chest when I heard knocking on the hatch. Bradlee and I looked at each other, surprise written on both of our faces.

“Willow, come on out. It’s Finn.”

I jumped up and unlocked the hatch, pushing it open to see a black clad shadow looming over me. “What in the world?”

“It’s an anti-thermal material that Duncan and Jennifer have been working on. Apparently, it works. You didn’t see me following you?”

I grinned, feeling the soft material. “No. How long were you following me?”

He reached down and held his hand out to help me up. “At least a quarter mile. I even danced around in front of Bernice to make sure I was in camera range.” He pulled me into his arms and I sighed with the contentment I felt. I had missed him so much. I wrapped my arms around him and squeezed tight.

“I missed you, Finn.”

“I missed you, Willow.”

“Hey, can we get everyone to safety before daylight? I feel like a sitting duck here.”

I glanced down at Bradlee. The frustrated look on his face told me he wasn’t worried about getting everyone to the mine; he just didn’t like seeing me in Finn’s arms.

I sighed and let go of Finn. “We do need to get everyone stashed away. How are we going to hide all of the equipment? Did you bring camo-nets?”

“The Montana Crows used this as a mid-way stop so they installed them years ago. I assume that the Dominion aren’t aware that its here.” He looked down at Bradlee. “I assume you can drive Bernice?”

“Of course I know how to drive an ACV.”

“Good,” Finn grinned. “You can follow us while I take Willow with me.” He closed the lid before Bradlee could respond and I punched him lightly in the shoulder.

“That wasn’t nice. He’s been good to me. He looks out for me.”

“That’s fine. I appreciate it. But you’re with me now and it’s my job to look out for you.”

“Ugh. I’m not some helpless girl that needs a big, bad boy to protect me. I can take care of myself, or have you forgotten?”

He rubbed the scar on his arm and shook his head. “Nope, I haven’t forgotten though I might need a refresher on your hand-to-hand combat.”

I shoved him away and climbed down Bernice. “Jerk.”

He climbed down behind me and jumped on an ATV that was hidden in one of the crumbling shacks.
