Within twenty minutes the crew filled the halls and Cash was relieved from his post by a man in a giant bomb proof outfit, with bomb dogs, and a swat team unit who had flanked all sides of the empty rink and deployed to all levels of the arena, clearing out office workers…

Everyone else waited outside, but they were let in soon after.

One of the lead investigators from the Prowler’s previous crime scenes, Officer Grayson, came forward to talk to Cash.

He had a smug look on his face.

Threat was false, he chuffed, as we already knew.

What makes you say that?

We’ve been here already this week. Next time, do your homework.

Emily was standing by. She looked at Cash, confused.

I never called earlier, she said.

No, you didn’t. He did, Officer Grayson pointed at Carter, who was off to the side. He called with the same report. He had seen the wires. We had dogs run all over the building.

Cash looked aside at Carter, in disbelief.

What was it then? Cash asked.

Battery box. One of the contractors was running wire on the wall to avoid being a tripping hazard. He was planning on taking them down tomorrow.

Cash shook his head. I don’t get it. You found nothing!? What about the images posted on walls and screens?

You mean the graphics of the bomb? It’s symbolic.

The officer flipped out his phone and showed Cash a dozen pictures with the same graphic, from around the state.

They’re fear mongers. That’s what they do. All bark and no bite. We’ve seen it before. In this case they’re mocking John Baker, who’s been calling East Bank a boomtown since the start of the renovation project. But, he said, glibly, we wouldn’t expect you to know that.

The officer’s sarcastic tone infuriated Cash. He said, I don’t buy it. Symbolic mockery doesn’t account for murder.

Sure it does, Grayson argued. Listen, hobbycop, I advise you to stand down and get your nose out of this trouble. We’re on it. This case - your hobby - is our town. Our livelihood. You don’t know anything about it.

The last thing we need is to take speculative leads from guys who fly in on the red eye, dabble around, and whip up their bogus leads. We’re the ones who know the town. We’re the ones who know the power players and the tactics they use. We’re the ones who know the streets. We don’t live in some made up hobbycop world on tv where…

Cash listened with his eyes to the floor and a dark grin. His knuckles were white as his side.

Wipe that stupid grin off your face, Grayson said, What’s so funny to you?

It’s not funny. You say you know all the moves, all the players. If that’s true, if it’s that obvious, why did three people die on your watch in a span of days? If it was obvious what they were planning and what they were going to do next, why weren’t you there to prevent it? It’s not that the dog is all bark and no bite.
