Chapter Twelve

Kimi scowled ten minutes into the flight to Paatuun. She’d boarded Laaruu’s ship mere minutes after the medical facility of the space station had released her. The computer array and plug-in port had been installed in her brain two days prior—a freaky concept that left her squirming though she felt no different than before. She couldn’t stop fiddling with the plug-in at the base of her skull.

She opened her mouth to complain about not being a super-cyborg. Sitting across from her, Laaruu held up his hand. “I swear, if you ask me where Sarah Connor is again, I’ll sedate you for the rest of the trip.”

She snickered. “I’m getting bored with that joke myself. Seriously, I don’t feel any different. Didn’t Dr. Putz say I could download and access files today?”

“His name is Dr. Puutziis, you awful creature.”

“Fine, Dr. Puts-its. What was loaded in this thing to start with? When will I, uh, assimilate any of it?”

“Recite the five columns of Paatiin society.”

“Dignity above all else. Pride in oneself as a Paatiin. Honor, even if it means death. Self-sufficiency or self-destruction. Loyalty to our esteemed leaders.” Kimi recited the words without thinking about them. Her jaw dropped, and she stared at Laaruu in shock.

He grinned. “Everything you should understand, the rules, decorum and practices of a slave are now in your computer matrix. It’s all second nature.”

She touched the port with trembling fingers. “This is weird. I feel as if I’ve been brainwashed.”

“No, just given access to new files, the same as any computer. The information retrieval is instantaneous.”

“Holy fuck. What else?”

She’d barely finished the question when Laaruu lunged at her. Her startled reaction was sublimated by her body going into immediate action. She dipped low and tried to sweep Laaruu’s leg. When he evaded by dancing out of reach, Kimi jumped to the end of the cramped cabin and set for his next attempt.

He smirked. “Effortless, was it not? I bought you the top-of-the-line fighting package. You may thank me now.”

“Shit! That was crazy!” She hugged herself with glee as Laaruu settled back in his seat. “This is so weird. But cool! But weird. I’m freaked out and loving it at once.”

“You have the knowledge of over five hundred fighting masters of multiple disciplines. I may have gone overboard, but you have to be ready when you encounter Hanos again.”

Kimi started to sit down and found she was too excited to do so. She paced instead. “I bet he’s got a top-of-the-line program installed too.”

“No doubt.”

“He must have quite a few fighters programmed to the gills as well.”

“With hand-to-hand expertise, not to mention knives, blades of all kinds, and firearms. However, most are simply cannon fodder or mercenaries. They usually can’t afford upgrades, not like you have.”

“So am I a war machine or just a bump in the road to him?”

“Don’t get cocky, but don’t discount yourself, either. The fact you got free from him, even for only a few seconds, is impressive. You should have had no chance against him whatsoever.
