Chapter 5

Kace

I park the truck and walk in the door. “Cassie!” I got off work a little early, worried that Cassie would have trouble getting around the house. It seems she didn’t have too much trouble getting around because she’s not on the couch where I left her. Dean looks at me from his spot on the sofa. “Where’d she go, little guy?” I give him a scratch and then go to find my woman.

I expect to find her in the guest room, but it and the bathroom are empty, and her stuff is gone.

If she thinks I’ll let her just walk out of my life, she’s got another thing coming. Especially while she’s having trouble actually walking. Har har. It’s not even funny. She’s so generous and loving to the people she cares about. I didn’t have that growing up, so I recognize how fucking special she is. It’s a miracle that even with her history, she still manages to shine a light wherever she goes. I feel a desperate need to protect her. To make sure that nothing and no one ever manages to smother her spirit.

I pull out of the driveway just minutes after pulling in, calling Ox along the way for her address. Cassie is the woman I’ve always wanted. She’s mine and it’s time for me to let her know.

Ten minutes later, I’m walking up the stairs to her apartment. I think I’m getting close, but it looks like there’s some smarmy dude and his pregnant girlfriend standing in her doorway. What the fuck is going on? These don’t look like her people. They look like prime examples of one hundred percent douchery.

“Cassie, come on.” I overhear the dude whining to my woman. “There’s no reason we can’t be friends. Kelli’s never done anything to you. And I thought, with our history, maybe you’d like to be our babysitter once the baby gets here, since you don’t have kids of your own.”

“Get the fuck out of here, Frank. We’re divorced. That means I never have to see you again,” Cassie says from inside the apartment.

“Wait, you’re Cassie’s ex?” I’m done listening. I’ve been in a foul mood since I got home and Cassie was gone. And that mood is only getting worse after listening to this asshole for half a minute. I stride forward, putting my body in the doorway and forcing Frank and his baby mama to back up. “No wonder she opened a shop with adult toys after kicking you out.” My disgust couldn’t be more obvious.

“Who the fuck are you?” The little prick postures, thrusting his chin up. He wouldn’t intimidate me even if I couldn’t see the sweat beading on his brow and his hands trembling. But I’m not giving him any leeway. Not after he fucked with my woman and then dumped her.

My muscles swell and my fists clench, fully prepared to smash Frank into oblivion. I’ve got a whole truck full of demolition equipment and I’m tempted to put them to use right now.
