Chapter Thirteen

Skye

It was Saturday morning at the Hearthstone Farm Inn, and for the first time since moving back home, I woke up feeling refreshed and like a new woman.

After dinner the night before, I spent the rest of the evening with Broderick and Phillip in the guest house. My parents still didn’t know that I was fooling around with them, although I wouldn’t call watching movies and eating pizza ‘fooling around.’ Instead, the three of us got to know each other better before I walked across the farm and fell asleep in my bubble gum pink room.

I had fallen asleep while reading Two Birds and A Goat, which was the playbill that Annie had given me. She was confident that I’d be perfect for the main female character. Less than a quarter into the playbill, and I had already found it to be quite dull, though.

After putting the playbill back into my antique Victorian nightstand, I sat up in bed and took a long whiff. My mother was cooking breakfast downstairs, and from the smell of things, she was preparing her famous farm-fresh quiche. Eggs from our chickens, plus cheese and vegetables from another local farmer. She usually served with it freshly-squeezed juice, too.

I slid into my pink satin bathrobe and made my way downstairs, where I promptly poured myself a cup of coffee and sat down at the table.

“Skye, can you come in here for a moment?”

I went back into the kitchen and found my mother emerging from the back porch.

“Are you seriously wearing your bathrobe in front of our guests, Skye?”

“Sorry, but I just woke up and didn’t want to miss breakfast.”

My mother eyed me suspiciously before checking on her quiche. The smell of it, as she opened the oven, made my mouth water.

“I didn’t think you’d allow yourself a slice of quiche.”

“What makes you say that?”

She put her hands on her fat hips and gave me that all too familiar knowing look.

“Ever since you moved to Minneapolis, all you ever talk about is what you can’t eat. That’s why I made you some oatmeal and even cut up an avocado for you."

"Aw, thank you, mom! I’ll have that, too.”

“Along with the bacon and quiche?”

“You made bacon, too?!”

My mother pulled a baking sheet full of burnt, crispy bacon out from the second oven.

“When you find my daughter within that body of yours, please tell her that we’re looking for her.”

After breakfast with my family and the guests, I realized that I had no idea what to do with myself all day. 4C was closed on the weekends and had I been back in Minneapolis, and I’d be spending it grocery shopping and hitting the gym. But the nearest gym was half an hour away, and besides, I wasn’t in the mood to work out. The thought of reading Two Birds and A Goat didn’t appeal to me, either.

After showering and slipping into a pair of denim cutoff shorts and a tank top, I decided to spend the day right there on the farm.
