ALEX had to admit he’d had a good day sightseeing and just hanging out wherever they’d stopped. It had been real easy between them—no more talk of what the future would hold, just being in the here and now. But the end of his vacation and his days with Jordon sat heavy on his mind when they returned to their private mountain getaway. They stopped one last time to fill their bellies for the night and bought a bottle of whiskey and some water.
After gathering up some more brush and driftwood, he dusted off his jeans and joined Jordon, who’d stretched out on top of the blanket, watching the fire he’d made.
The night had turned black, but the sky was studded once again with millions of twinkling stars. He stared up at the sky in wonderment, knowing no matter what became of them after they left, he would always thank Jordon for showing him the stars.
He reached for the whiskey bottle and took a long pull, his throat turning numb from the burn of alcohol. He was relying on the drink to help loosen his tongue so he could really talk to Jordon. There were so many thoughts tangled up in his head, but nothing would come out. He felt a nudge along his arm, Jordon gesturing for the bottle. He passed it over, dragging his gaze away from Jordon’s bobbing throat as he drank. He swatted at a mosquito and scratched at the back of his neck.
“Some heavy thinkin’ goin’ on in that head of yours,” Jordon said quietly, staring trancelike into the fire.
“Hmmm.”
“That right?” Jordon softly chuckled. “That’s a mighty big hmmm.”
Sighing again, he turned his head so he could see Jordon. “Don’t know where to start.”
“Well, just throw out the first thing comes into your head.”
“I don’t know.” He groaned, almost ready to crawl out of his skin, because this was one of those times where he really hated himself for not being able to just spit it out.
“Try again,” Jordon coaxed.
The fire snapped, the croaking of frogs loud as ever. He took the bottle again and drank deep, passing it back to Jordon, who took a gulp, screwed the cap on, and set it down in the sand.
“That’s just it. There’s so much.” He wanted to head off into the night and not look back, but he realized he’d done too much of that in his past. He eyed Jordon for a breath and then threw a branch onto the flames, sending up a shower of sparks, smiling slightly when he remembered how much Jordon liked that.
“Everythin’ up until a few days ago was just fine,” he continued. “Then I come here… meet you, and I don’t know what I’m supposed to be doin’. You got me all upside down and inside out.”
“I’m sorry I did that to you.” Jordon reached for his knee and gave it a squeeze.
Alex snorted. “Well… you do have a way about you.” He gave Jordon a small smile.
“Let me try, see if I can get something out of your head.
