Chapter Sixteen

“Eddie you’re not going to believe this” said Dennis Chapman on his cell phone, “all sorts of things are coming out of the White House this afternoon”. Eddie said he hadn’t seen anything on TV, so what could possibly be happening? Dennis told Eddie that they’ve been invited to a press conference.

“Do you want me there Dennis?”

“Sure I want you there but someone doesn’t like you remember” said Dennis. Dennis said he would go to the White House press conference himself but if he could make his way into the office he’ll brief him later. Eddie and his girlfriend Vivian were staying in a motel on Georgia Avenue in northwest Washington. Vivian wasn’t pleased that Eddie is taking the risk of going out. However, Eddie told Vivian that if he doesn’t get out of the room soon he would be climbing up the wall. As Eddie walked to his car in the lot a tall looking guy had just gotten out of his car. He was driving an old Saturn Sky Roadster in silver but it drew Eddie’s attention.

“She’s a beaut’ isn’t she” said the tall man who was very gaunt looking having hollow cheeks.

“Yes it looks well”, said Eddie not really wanting to engage in conversation.

“Hi I’m John, I think we’re neighbors” This was indeed John, John Kettering also known as ‘Ketch’. “Are you staying a while here?”

“Not sure” replied Eddie “Hey where’s your accent from, Australia?” Eddie made a point of opening his car door so he didn’t engage in a lengthy conversation.

“No, I’m English”, answered Ketch”.

Eddie raised his hand to acknowledge Ketch and then reversed and sped from the motel. He drove around the block and pulled over. Pulling his cell phone from his pocket he frantically rang Vivian. “Viv, listen, when that guy delivered the poisonous pizza, was he tall and thin”.

“Yeah”

“That Australian accent, could it have been an English accent?” asked Eddie.

“Yes it could have been English, it was English”, replied Vivian as she gripped her cell phone with both hands.

Eddie told Vivian to remain calm, drop everything she’s doing and quietly leave the motel room. He told her to leave her car for now and walk directly to the roadside and he would drive by and pick her up. He told her to do it “Now”. Without hesitation Vivian started to walk “Don’t hang up on me” said Vivian.

Eddie selected ‘Drive’ and eased on the gas “I won’t Viv come on you can do it”. Vivian tiptoed out the motel room her shoes in hand. The door to the next room was open but she couldn’t hear anything. Rather than turn right to walk past their neighbor’s doorway she chose to turn left. This was in fact a longer walk to the stairway and Vivian and Eddie were on the third floor. She quickened her pace holding the phone to her ear like a child with a comforter. At the top of the stair she couldn’t help her self and took a fleeting glance over her shoulder.
