Chapter 9

I had several days before Gloria's meeting and winging down to South Florida. I spent part of this time considering Sho'nuff Dixon and again reviewing the Green Bottom Springs murder newspaper files Julie gave me.

I had attended portions of the trial and heard all the testimony. Two men received the death sentence. Florida executed the road guard years later. The other death row inmate died in his cell of natural causes. Three men remained incarcerated in various institutions around the state plus minor players with lesser sentences. Of those serving lesser charges, I'd always wondered why Halbert escaped apprehension in the extensive roundup of the gang.

I poked through the files until I had written down all their names. It wouldn't take too much work on the Web to locate all three of the surviving leaders. I wanted to determine if Sho'nuff participated in the smuggling operation. If I obtained a sworn statement to that effect, we could arrest Halbert and get him out of our lives for good.

In my hotel room that evening, I booted up my laptop and opened a browser window. While typing in the first convict's name, my cell rang.

"Hey, sweet man," Leigh said.

"Beautiful lady. How are you doing this fine evening?"

"Couldn’t be better. Where are you, sweet Red?"

"I'm in Jax now but heading to Miami,” I told her. “After I get back, I plan to drive to Savannah for a few days."

"Lovely. Hey, I wanted to tell you that I did have lunch with an old Sweet Briar friend of mine the other day. She's Connie McIntosh, who's an artist here in Savannah. We roomed together my freshman year."

"Anything interesting come of the Vixen reunion?"

"How on earth did you know that was our mascot?"

"I know a lot of things about your past you don't know I know."

"We have to talk, buddy," she said with a giggle. "Anyhow, Connie remembered that whole crew from Jacksonville. She was kind of a wild child herself. You know those artsy types. Anyway, she hung out with Myla Cane, Gloria, and your missing man, Mr. Woody."

"Now that is a boatload of mullet ready for the smokehouse," I said. "What did she say?"

“She was not part of the core circle of friends, but she went to parties around the Sweet Briar campus,” Leigh said. “Woody and Gloria weren't a couple at that time, according to Connie. But Woody kept close to Myla. She recalled one gathering with Gloria and other girls. Myla was already there, dancing with Woody. At the dance, the couple disappeared and wasn't seen again until several hours later. No doubt that happened quite often."

"Now that is interesting, but not totally surprising,” I told her. “I found out the other night that Myla Cane had Woody's baby. Kid's going to school at Auburn now."

"O-M-G! I'm just surprised he didn't impregnate her forty years ago."

I could only speculate on that, but I said something anyway. "He apparently got her preggers more than once, according to my knowledgeable and trusted source.
