Chapter 27
Jemima arrived at the womenâs refuge for the second time that day. She pressed the buzzer as they held their IDâs up to the monitor, and once the woman inside the refuge was satisfied, she operated the mechanism to open the gates. Jemima and Trent walked towards the house and, eventually, the front door opened.
Harriet Breen was a squat, muscular looking woman with short grey hair and thin lips. She looked harassed and didnât seem particularly pleased to see them.
âIâve been expecting you. Hurry up and get inside so I can lock the door. Youâve called at a bad time. One of the womenâs a bit spooked. Reckons she saw her ex in town this afternoon. Now sheâs afraid he may have spotted her, and everyoneâs waiting for something to kick off.â
âHas there been any sign of someone hanging around outside?â asked Jemima.
âNo, but most of these women have spent so much time being scared that they jump when they see their reflection in a mirror. Theyâre safe enough here, though. Not that theyâll take my word for it. I keep telling them, no oneâs going to get in, especially on my watch,â said Harriet.
âLetâs hope your confidence isnât misplaced,â said Jemima. âI take it you know that the woman who went by the name of Tara Fenton was murdered about a fortnight ago and buried in Helen Tremaineâs wood?â
âYes, Vanessa told me when she did the handover. I canât believe it. Itâs awful. Iâll help in any way I can. I liked Tara, but unless youâve proof someoneâs targeting these women, then I donât want you scaring them further by making them think theyâre more at risk than they are. Theyâve got enough on their plates as it is. Some of them may put on a bit of a front, but believe me itâs just their way of getting through the day. Most of them are fragile. Something like this could send them over the edge. So Iâm asking you to think about what you say to them. Just show some sensitivity, thatâs all.â
âWeâve no intention of scaring anyone,â Jemima assured her, âbut we need to find out as much as we can about Tara. Weâll need to speak with Tania Stockbridge, Faith Jones and any of the other women who knew her.â
âYou canât talk to Faith tonight,â said Harriet. âSheâs the one who thought she saw her husband. Youâll not get any sense out of her at the moment, but Tania will probably talk to you. She and Tara were friends. Well, as close as any of them get to friendship in here, though I doubt theyâd have shared much personal information. Conversations around here tend to be quite superficial. Everyoneâs scared of revealing something that could lead to them being forced to return home. They all want new lives and have too much to lose if something goes wrong. Everyoneâs wrapped up in their own problems. Itâs an unwritten rule that no one pries into someone elseâs business.
