Chapter 27

Jemima arrived at the women’s refuge for the second time that day. She pressed the buzzer as they held their ID’s up to the monitor, and once the woman inside the refuge was satisfied, she operated the mechanism to open the gates. Jemima and Trent walked towards the house and, eventually, the front door opened.

Harriet Breen was a squat, muscular looking woman with short grey hair and thin lips. She looked harassed and didn’t seem particularly pleased to see them.

‘I’ve been expecting you. Hurry up and get inside so I can lock the door. You’ve called at a bad time. One of the women’s a bit spooked. Reckons she saw her ex in town this afternoon. Now she’s afraid he may have spotted her, and everyone’s waiting for something to kick off.’

‘Has there been any sign of someone hanging around outside?’ asked Jemima.

‘No, but most of these women have spent so much time being scared that they jump when they see their reflection in a mirror. They’re safe enough here, though. Not that they’ll take my word for it. I keep telling them, no one’s going to get in, especially on my watch,’ said Harriet.

‘Let’s hope your confidence isn’t misplaced,’ said Jemima. ‘I take it you know that the woman who went by the name of Tara Fenton was murdered about a fortnight ago and buried in Helen Tremaine’s wood?’

‘Yes, Vanessa told me when she did the handover. I can’t believe it. It’s awful. I’ll help in any way I can. I liked Tara, but unless you’ve proof someone’s targeting these women, then I don’t want you scaring them further by making them think they’re more at risk than they are. They’ve got enough on their plates as it is. Some of them may put on a bit of a front, but believe me it’s just their way of getting through the day. Most of them are fragile. Something like this could send them over the edge. So I’m asking you to think about what you say to them. Just show some sensitivity, that’s all.’

‘We’ve no intention of scaring anyone,’ Jemima assured her, ‘but we need to find out as much as we can about Tara. We’ll need to speak with Tania Stockbridge, Faith Jones and any of the other women who knew her.’

‘You can’t talk to Faith tonight,’ said Harriet. ‘She’s the one who thought she saw her husband. You’ll not get any sense out of her at the moment, but Tania will probably talk to you. She and Tara were friends. Well, as close as any of them get to friendship in here, though I doubt they’d have shared much personal information. Conversations around here tend to be quite superficial. Everyone’s scared of revealing something that could lead to them being forced to return home. They all want new lives and have too much to lose if something goes wrong. Everyone’s wrapped up in their own problems. It’s an unwritten rule that no one pries into someone else’s business.
