26 Bet You Say That To All The Girls

AIDEN OPENED HIS EYES SLOWLY in the dark, his mouth dry and pasty. He rolled slowly, his stomach churning and rebelling against the excessive alcohol he’d poured into it. That wasn’t how he’d pictured last night, not even close. Being their first trip together he’d wanted it to be romantic, not him getting drunk off his ass and her tucking him into bed like he was a child.

His head pounded, he felt nauseous and too terrified to move. Vomiting on your girlfriend wasn’t the way to get sympathy, or win points. Sitting carefully, he spotted the water on the bedside table, and silently thanked Emily. Guzzling half of it down, he flopped back onto the pillow.

“You okay?” Her soft hand brushed over his hair, rubbing gently.

He tried to calm the rolling sea inside with several deep breaths. “Don’t know, feel sick,” he mumbled, before bolting for the bathroom. His stomach roiled, and he barely made it to the toilet before he emptied the contents. Sinking onto the cold tile floor, he willed the waves of nausea to stop.

Emily rubbed his back, kneeling beside him. “You’re cold, come back to bed, baby.”

“Not yet.” He sank into the warm arms encircling him, relaxing as her lips touched his hair in a light caress.

“Let me get you a blanket.”

“Don’t go.” He held her tighter, breathing deeply as his stomach churned. “You might want to–” He hung over the porcelain again, his body rebelling against the excessive alcohol intake.

Emily didn’t leave, but stroked his back, offering him water to rinse his mouth. He figured she’d seen worse. The upside of dating another doctor, she wasn’t faint hearted or squeamish.

“Back to bed.” Emily helped him to his feet and tucked him in before joining him.

“Sorry, not romantic.”

“Don’t worry about it, it wasn’t a great visit with your parents. Sleep. You can make it up to me tomorrow.”

Aiden woke much later, to the buzzing of his phone. The clock read 11:07 a.m., he’d slept for hours. Dragging himself from the bed, he scrambled for the jacket Emily had draped neatly over a chair.

Other than his annoyingly insistent phone, the room was silent and empty. Where was she? Running for the hills probably, why would she stick around after last night? She’d tucked him into bed like a small errant child, or maybe an unruly teenager would be a more apt description.

Stupid, stupid, stupid, he berated himself as he searched for his phone. “Ah.” He fumbled it out of the pocket. The call display showed a Chicago area code, so not his dad at least, but his heart sank as he realized I wasn’t Emily either. “Hello?”

“Aiden?”

He recognized her voice instantly, his lip curled as he remembered her betrayal. “To what do I owe the honour?” he asked sarcastically, tempted to add a comment about her being a conniving little rat.

“Nice to talk to you too. What the hell are you thinking?” She sounded bitchy and imperious, and it annoyed him even further, if possible.
