Sixteen

After Kendra takes the spell off the three people affected in the room, she discusses with Cameron and Brandon a plan to take the spell off the rest of the people trapped in the school.

Searching the room, I find Ethan talking with Michael and his boyfriend. How things have changed in only a matter of minutes. I would never have imagined my cousin having a calm conversation with his ex-boyfriend. I approach them in the middle of a conversation.

“It was nice,” Michael says. “My mother even gave Brian a hug.”

It is nice to see the two men getting along. Maybe something good has finally come out of this night. “Sorry to interrupt.” I smile at my cousin before turning to Michael. “Do you remember the conversation we had earlier in the evening?”

“I remember you and Van coming up to me. I’m glad you two have found your way back to each other.”

My eyes instantly seek out Brandon, who frowns. “We aren’t together. Just friends.” I pull the napkin of the rune from my back pocket. “We asked about this symbol we thought might be a rune. You told us it was for fertility.”

He takes the napkin. “This isn’t the rune for fertility. It’s the Sun.” He hands it back to me. “Runes can mean several different things. The sun can represent joy, abundance, inspiration, and good fortune. It can also mean success.”

“Joy and good fortune?” I tap a finger to my chin. This doesn’t make sense. What does that have to do with Angela’s murder? Why would this symbol be burnt into her hand? Was it a sign of the happiness the killer felt at her death?

Kendra moves away from Cameron and Brandon. She sits on one of the chairs and stares at the computer monitor. Leaving the guys, I head over and take a seat beside her.

“It’s so weird to see myself doing something I don’t remember doing,” she says.

“I know.” I watch Brandon pace as he talks on his phone. “We’ll figure out what happened.”

She nods toward the sheriff. “I see good things between you two.”

Why do people constantly assume I’m in a relationship with Van or Brandon? I’m preparing to deny her claims as Brandon puts his phone into his back pocket, stepping up to us.

“Lee’s gathering everyone in the gym. He’s getting a few of the werewolves to help. They should be ready by the time you get there,” he says to Kendra.

She nods and exits with Cameron and Ethan, leaving the door open. Brandon takes the seat she vacated. “Can you show me this thing you noticed on the security feed?”

I shake my head. “I don’t know how to run the program.”

“I know how to do that; I just need you to point it out to me.”

He rewinds the video feed, stopping when I point out where we first noticed the strange mist around Kendra. We watch in silence as a darkness hovers around her body before melting into her.

“The same thing happened to Michael while Van and I talked to him.
