Chapter 26

Both men were larger than nature intended, but they hid their enhancements as per Scala City convention. If only Drake hid his nerves half as well. He trembled with every step. Each man over six feet four inches tall. One of them had pale skin, tattoos around his neck, cropped black hair, and a full set of gold teeth, which he showed to Drake by raising his top lip in a snarl. The other man, several shades darker than Drake, had a long, black ponytail that ran down between his shoulder blades like a greasy snake.

Any hint that he’d not done this before and the men would tell him to fuck right off. Drake cleared his throat, made eye contact with both Gold Teeth and Ponytail, and said, “I like women.”

The two men shared a look. Drake might seem like he didn’t belong, but he knew the code.

Gold Teeth opened the door while Ponytail stood aside to let Drake enter.

Stairs led down to the basement. Luminous paint streaked the black walls and ceiling. Snakes in yellows, greens, and oranges. They twisted through one another, guiding the punters down to the action. They followed the same angle of descent as the stairs and the handrail.

Gold Teeth led the way.

About halfway down the flight of stairs, the music from the bar above clashed with the sounds coming from the basement. They vied for Drake’s attention, entering his brain through both ears and making his head spin. But he grabbed the handrail and pushed on until the sounds above faded.

Getting in had seemed like the hard part, but now he needed to seek answers to his questions. Where were the dancers from? Did they know where they’d taken the other trafficked women? Had they ever met his daughters? And how would he describe his two girls? They were still six and ten in his mind’s eye. He only had photographic evidence to back up his memories.

The new groove, slower and richer than the one above. Altogether more hypnotic. It called to Drake, lured him in, invited him to relax and part with his hard-earned credits. He ruffled his nose when he entered a cloud of perfume. A mix of distinct scents, each one probably perfect for the woman who wore it, but they were by no means greater than the sum of their parts. He pressed the back of his hand to his nose to block it out as best he could.

A CCTV camera shone white in the black light at the bottom of the stairs. It focused on the doorway leading to the brothel, a fire alarm beneath it. Drake’s heart beat as hard as the bassline. His mouth dried. He ran his fingers around the credit card in his pocket, tracing its outline. He’d get a drink first.

But Gold Teeth walked past the door on his left and opened one on his right, revealing another flight of stairs.

Drake paused beside the door and turned to Ponytail above him. “Aren’t we supposed to go in there?”

Ponytail sent him stumbling after Gold Teeth with a shove.
