CHAPTER 17

Lynn pulled up to Erin’s house as she was carrying a couple of chairs and umbrella down the driveway.

“Hey, Lynn. Ready to go?” Erin asked handing Lynn a chair.

“I’m ready.”

Before they could leave, Helen came out onto the front porch. Her arms were crossed across her chest and a frown was on her face. “Hello,” she said to Lynn.

“Helen, this is Lynn.”

“Nice to meet you, Helen,” Lynn said before Erin led her away. “That’s the mother-in-law?”

“Yeah,” Erin answered shaking her head.

“She wasn’t too happy seeing you leave with me. Does she know I’m your partner?”

“Don’t know and I don’t care. She’s always up in my business.”

Lynn chuckled. “I bet she is on the phone with Jane already telling her about me.”

“Jane knows I don’t cheat.”

Helen went back into the house the moment Erin left the yard.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Jane, Erin just left with some woman.”

“Who?” Jane asked.

“I don’t know. Erin introduced her as Lynn.”

“That’s Erin’s partner. They’re meeting the girls on the beach today and there is a barbecue later.” Jane paused. “She’s pretty, isn’t she?”

“Dark hair and very pretty. She was wearing a pair of cut off shorts with a bikini top.”

Jane laughed. “I didn’t ask what she was wearing.”

“Well, you should have. She likes Erin. I can tell.”

“I trust Erin.”

“Uh, huh,” Helen answered.

“I do, Mom.” Good thing her mother couldn’t see the roll of her eyes. Jane was sure she’d make a comment about that.

“If you say so, Jane. Are you going to the barbecue?”

“Yes. As soon as I can get out of here this afternoon, I’ll join them at Kate and Kelly’s house.”

“Good.”

Jane just laughed before she said good-bye to her mother.

Erin and Lynn scanned the beach looking for the rest of the group. As soon as they spotted them, they headed toward them.

“Hey, everybody,” Erin said as she approached.

“You made it, Erin,” Jennifer said turning in her chair.

“This is Lynn. That’s Jennifer, Reese, Kelly, Kate and I’m sorry I don’t know you two.”

“That’s Sara and Terry,” Kate said as the rest of the group completed the circle. “Jane is going to join us later, isn’t she?”

Erin nodded. “When she gets off work.”

Sara and Terry were new to the group of friends. They had recently retired from the military and moved into Terry’s parent’s home. They looked to be in their late fifties and very butch.

“Good. We haven’t spent much time with her lately,” Kelly said.

Erin explained to Lynn the married couples of the group and that Jennifer and Reese had two kids.

“Two kids. Where are they?”

“With my parents,” Reese answered. She watched as Lynn was constantly touching Erin as she spoke. Reese thought Erin was oblivious to the advances that Lynn was making on her and she wondered if she should say anything.

At two o’clock, everyone packed up their things and walked back to Kate and Kelly’s house. Coolers were placed outside with refreshments and Kate went into the house to retrieve the snacks. Two new women walked into the backyard.

Kate greeted them. “Hi, you two, I’m glad you could make it.
